If you were taking UTN's advice I take it you took a flask and some sandwiches for a pit stop!!

These days are long gone MB!

Your time fr the two bridges is quite impressive though.

Did it on Saturday morning with the bike club and took a slightly different route.

Stayed on the low raod right through Boness and up the hill at the far side, which is more difficult than taking the higher road past the Learig Pub .

Also never turned at Champany corner, but went straight on up past The Park Bistro and towards Philipstoun, then towards South Queensferrry, which added a few miles onto the trip, but less busy roads.

Scary incident though outside Rosyth and shook us all up a bit

I just had a look if its pishing down i could be dropping down into the 100K mark lol

The power of positive thought is what is required!

I was talking to a colleague this morning who reckons that, post hurricane mis-forecast debacle a few years ago, the BBC tend to err on the side of caution with their forecasting. Apparently, they opt to forecast a margin of error of up to 30% in favour of shite weather, and that way they are less likely to be derided if it is more clement as opposed to the opposite scenario, if that makes any sense.

As of today, the BBC website has it down for light rain showers on Sunday. By the above reckoning, this means that in reality, we could be in for an ideal day for the ride on Sunday....

I know exactly the route you mean and does add a few miles to the journey but decent ones. The hill (Carriden Brae) at the end of Bo'ness is a real tough one!!!

I actually did it reverse this time and went from SQ through Bo'ness and back through Culross and the likes. There are no really hard hills that way other than the one over from Rosyth to FRB and is more gradual climbing on the way back which was decent.

Never, ever go onto Wiggle.co.uk - you will spend all of your money and waste hours upon hours browsing. Just ordered new pedals, mudguards, more sports drinks and base layers from there. Not been out very much this summer due to an exam this coming Friday, so hopefully get out quite a bit the next few weeks!

No harm in indulging in some bike porn browsing from time to time.

I find that treating myself to a nice bit of kit now and again can give me a wee added incentive to get out on the bike - whether it is to show off your new threads, or test run that new saddle or seatpost.

Wiggle is a monstrously huge site, and it can take a while to whittle things down to what you are actually looking for - so, more often than not you end up buying something you don't neessarily need that you've just stumbled upon and decided you want. CRC and Evans are similar, as are a few others. I always look out for price match guarantees. Evans are good for this, but just this week I've found reason to be a bit pissed off with their customer service, so that hasn't went down too well. I'm a pretty loyal costomer, and will always take my custom back if the transaction has been painless.

I'd recommend MySpokes, HighonBikes, Prendas, and Cyclestore if you fancy a change from the big guns.

Bloody hell and here was me thinking your time of 2 hours 17 minutes was fairly decent, that's more or less downhill all the way around

Went out with Club last night and tried to puch above me weight by going out with a combination of 2nd and 3rd group (I'm usually in 1st)

Managed to stay with them for the first 16 miles, but they upped the pace and I just couldn't stay with the group.

However, managed 24 miles in just over 1 hour 13 minutes, which was an average of 19.7 mph.

Quite happy considering it was a bit blustery.

Give me a few more weeks and I'll have the buggers

UTN, how much difference do you think it makes to your average speed working in a group rather than going out on your own?

The averages you are talking about are impressive. I know how hard I work when I am out on my own and can't really see me getting to an average of around 20mph.

To be honest quite a lot.

Cycling on your own is tough especially when conditions aren't perfect.

When you're in a group it amazing the difference it makes when you get some shelter from the wind.

We either go out in a formation of pairs, when each pair take a turn of around 5 minutes at the front,or a chain gang, when the group is continually rotating back to front.

In a group you also encourage, help and push each other along and if training and you want to keep with the pack, you push yourself that wee bit more.

When I go out on my own, even if I push myself,I find it really difficult to get this sort of average speed,as its sometimes all too easy to give yourself a wee bit of a breather,or even stop for the occassional coffee and scone

I know I keep harping on about it,but I cant recommend it highly enough and it's certainly brought my bike skills, speed and overall fitness up to a level I wouldn't have been at this stage if I'd just continued going out alone

Training is kind of taking a pounding with the weather at the moment, had hoped to get out last night but the weather was shocking.

Wife working tonight and stuff on in SQ for Ferry Fair Day tomorrow and Saturday is seriously going to affect my cycling for the next few days.

Hope to get out sown in Dunbar on Sunday with the guy I am doing the PFS with - weather permitting.

If weathers decent, might come over to SQ on Saturday for Ferry Day,as never been before.

Wife and I happened to be out thatway when RNLI day was on and town was heaving, but had a good day.

Is Ferry Day much the same, with stalls, events etc,etc

Yeah, I've been off work the last 3 days (first grand-kid being born therefore dad the taxi driver needed) and I'd hoped to get some miles in the legs as the cycling parlance goes. No such luck in this weather. Not so much the rain as the wind.

Yep, very much the same but with usual event of crowning Ferry Fair Queen and all that stuff. Will be busy - you could cycle straight along the canal and be there in no time!!

Disaster has struck!

100 mile sportive on Sunday....£300+ sponsorship already received....training been going pretty well....weather improving....have been really looking forward to it....

I've got a cold :(

Oh dear.

I've pumped myself full of vitamins, and I'm currently attempting to harness the power of positive thought, but, in reality, I'm shitein' masel'. I'm no spring chicken, and fitter and younger guys than me have suffered heart attacks when attempting to take part in endurance sports when they aren't well enough.

I can live with the ignominy of starting then having to chuck it due to feeling too ill to carry on (well....I can just about live with that). Dropping dead is something that will be harder to...aherm...live with, however.

FFS, very, very frustrating, but I'm still hoping that this won't developing to anything too full blown. Worst case scenario, I might have to sign up for the PFS 100 mile route next month as an alternative.

Bad news mate hope you feel better by Sunday. Did you get the email from the Glasgow 100 today saying that they are currently monitoring the situation due to the weather ooooo keeps up and its off lol highly unlikely as the weather is gradually getting better. But I am now off out after work to buy myself clear cycling glasses and ¾ waterproof trousers or just trousers etc just incase.

Kind of in the same situation with PFS 100 miles as I have racked up over £1k in sponsorship so regardless of weather / health I will be doing it.

Even if it takes 12 hours I will finish.

Solution to the problem.

You go along and give Drooper a backie round the course this weekend and then he can return the favour at PFS,regardless of your condition

Simples!
