Israel And The Palestinians (now with added Iran)

The 4 main world powers - China, Russia, India and the USA don't recognise the ICC, which makes you wonder what's the point? The only country to sign & ratify membership in the Middle East is Jordan.

So Biden thinks there’s no equivalence between Hamas and Netanyahu.

How many more incidences like this need to be uncovered to change his mind.

Gazans ‘shackled and blindfolded’ at Israel hospital

The willingness of the West, with the honourable exceptions of ROI and France, to ignore, or worse excuse, the actions of the Israeli government will be judged for years to come.

Even if he's right and they're not equivalent, it doesn't mean that Israel is innocent of war crimes.

The charge isn't "being the same as Hamas".

Doddery auld c**t. (Biden that is)

Given the current political situation in the US I’m inclined to cut Biden a lot of slack.

If the forthcoming election was even close to ‘normal’ I’d be willing to risk the election of a Republican President but the thought of a second Trump Presidency chills the blood.

So there’s a difficult electoral balance between placating the American public who are mainly pro-Israel and doing the right thing.

* Of course maybe it’s not electoral and Biden is one of those who genuinely thinks Israel can do no wrong.

** There’s an irony that those in the US who might be happy with attacks on Jews are not supporters of Biden but supporters of Trump.

The ICC is a fledgling attempt by the lesser powers to create an alternative global standard that will better protect them in future. The current global standard, created and enforced by USA, is simple might makes right. Europe and Japan have mostly benefited from that because USA hasn't turned its rage on them but there's no guarantee under the current standard that a new power like China will spare Japan, for example. This is probably why Japan is the highest donor nation to the ICC and the current president of it is Japanese. Europe is also realising the US global standard of might makes right is no longer working for it. Putin invoked the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia when trying to justify his Ukraine invasion. I don't follow his utterances enough to know but I wouldn't be surprised if he also pointed to the US-led invasion of Iraq. Invasions and regime change under flimsy humanitarian pretexts. The ICC actually initiated a preliminary investigation over Iraq and that's why USA enacted its "Hague Invasion" law.

I think going after Israel highlights what the ICC is about. Not only is this going after USA's baby, its also going after the most flagrant abuser of the US might makes right standard. This is about trying to create a new global standard based on universal principles. That'd be a safer standard for Europe, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and the other backers of the ICC.

"Might makes right" isn't a US invention. It applied to the Soviet Union when it quelled uprisings in Hungary and Czechoslovakia and the West sat with it's finger up it's arse. It applied to China when they took Tibet.  The ICC are currently investigating alleged crimes in Ukraine by Russia - how much of a shit do you think Russia gives?

Any global standard that doesn't include the active participation (and subjucation of) the major powers isn't worth the high quality embossed vellum it's written on.  This is political grandstanding, no more.

At the very least , the ICC action spotlights the moral bankruptcy of much of the Western world's current attitudes and actions.  Huge numbers of US students protesting demonstrates that there is a turning of the tide within the US.

Going by the bits and pieces I've read or listened to today from folk who know their stuff, it'll neither improve nor worsen things. In 2021, the Supreme Leader dispensed with the very limited democracy Iran had and just handpicked the president who died today.

Imagine thinking all those years ago that we'd be talking in misty eyed terms about Mamoud Adaminejad. Or at least we would be I could spell his name right.

Human rights have always been pretty optional anyway, but we're marching ever closer to governments everywhere brazenly doing whatever they want to whoever they want and repeating the mantra of "we have a right to defend ourselves".

As ever, looking forward to us withdrawing from the ECHR and seeing how long it takes for our government to need to defend the country from immigrants, Muslims, domestic terrorists, the homeless, the unemployed, Clyde supporters, Mumsnet, Fifers...

Norway to recognise Palestine as a state, Ireland and Spain set to follow.  Hopefully other European countries will do similar.

There was a reporter who said that difficulties with pronouncing his surname was resolved by comparing it to "Ah'm a dinner jacket".

Happy to help!

DISGUSTANG antisemitism from some of our closest neighbours!  :o

Hopefully a majority of Israelis understand that these are bare-minimum reactions to the mass slaughter of civilians rather than evidence that Israel is under threat from the Gentiles, which is how the cadre of psychopaths running the country will play it off.
