    That ball strike sounded phenomenally good. Amazes me that at times he seems to be able to hit his 3 wood closer that he can his wedges. Heard a stat the other week that from 100 yards or less he is consistently 6 feet further from the hole than his rivals. Disappointing finish for Bob, especially with a double bogey at a par 3.

    Kiwis are 144-4 at the close. Key wicket of Williamson fell late in the day, right after passing 50 a delivery from Curran found some extra bounce and reared up on Williamson who edged it to gully. Definitely England on top now.

    Yesterday was the 12th time since 2013 that McIlroy has hit a 65 or better in the opening round of a tourney. Remarkably he hasn't went on to win any of them.

    Pretty uninspiring stuff from both teams, but the Texans won't mind as they came out 20-17 winners. Hopkins came up with 2 big TD catches.

    Very hard to tell, I thought he might just have edged it first but I doubt it would have been overturned even if it had been reviewed, impossible to be 100% certain one way or other.

    Will be interesting to see how the Texans respond, I thought it would be a fairly close game at the weekend but the Ravens handed them their arses. It was the sort of defeat that could derail your season.

    MacIntyre and Kitayama out together today in their battle for Rookie of the Year. Both hit -1, and are paired together again tomorrow. Must confess to knowing next to feck all about the leader, Frenchman Mike Lorenzo-Vera, who hit -9 and leads by 1 from McIlroy, with Rahm on -6 and Fleetwood on -5.

    Could have been better for the Kiwis if Ross Taylor hadn't been having a kip in the slips a couple of times. Signs of a more pragmatic approach at times from England, in keeping with the new coach's wish to get back to occupying the crease as well as scoring runs. Denly carrying on his form from the summer, unfortunately so did Root.

    Good start from England, but 2 quick wickets reigns them in a bit. Root out for 2, edging an utterly dreadful shot to second slip. 121-3.

    If the top 4 can consistently provide a solid start then that would give the like of Buttler and Stokes license to cut loose, but number one priority has to be to stop finding themselves at 50-60 with 3 or 4 wickets down which has happened all too often in the last few years.

    In a rare show of awareness, especially given that they were playing in Turkey the other week, the European Tour have cancelled next week's Hong Kong Open due to the ongoing civil unrest.

    28 players got their card in the end with -12 the score you needed in the end. I'm sure Howie, Young and many others will be dissecting every dropped shot or missed putt over the 6 rounds. Euan Walker will be on the Challenge Tour, he only turned pro in September after the Walker Cup so could be one to watch next year.
