The New Raith Rovers Thread

Recommended Posts

Have to ask though. Regardless of annoying adverts or Ray Winstons head why would you not want the best odds going?

Could it possibly be because you're a bit thick?

You're obviously unable to comprehend gambling if you think i wouldn't rather stick a couple of quid on Cowden beating Rovers than winning the lottery.

Bit of a fail all round really mate. How was your maths at school?

Raging much?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember there being much in the way of dissent when Murray was given a new contract either.

You're completely right. The consensus was pretty much that Murray had made good summer signings, and that we'd done well to sign him on a long term deal before a top tier team tried to poach him. Certainly no moaning about it.

That's what I was thinking. The clear choice? He was the inexpensive choice and saved a panic, given it was late July when McGlynn left for Hearts. He had built up a bit of goodwill as he'd been an excellent player for us. I don't recall much dissension at the time, but there was never really any debate about it. It just happened. As I recall I didn't have an opinion either way as he had no track record to complain about.

Me neither. The cheapest option - someone already on the payroll, unproven and inexperienced. The short term blinded by cost 'value for money' man. He aint now.

As far as I remember people were more than happy for him to get the job. Continuity was the word used a lot. People were worried about his lack of experience but were hoping Smith stayed, which he did, to help him out. I can't really remember anyone being against him being appointed. Some had concerns but most were glad to have a fresh face in management instead of a mercenary.

That's what I would tell anyone if they asked about the reaction to Murray being appointed. I haven't an actual clue if I am correct or not

Regarding Murray's appointment, my thoughts at the time were something like, they have went for the cheapest option possible. Someone who they are already paying a wage to that might just be a good manager.

That's basically what I meant but maybe didn't make it clear. Whilst he wasn't the most experienced and clearly not the best manager at the time, I don't recall anyone having a real moan at his appointment and most agreed continuity was a good thing whilst having a player/manager was they way forward and had proved successful for other teams, both in ours and lower leagues.

Another concern is that we seem just to be putting youth players on the bench to fill spaces. Apart from Callachan and Vaughan, both who can't really be considered "youth" players anymore, Murray appears unwilling to bring any of them on. Last season Matthews spent the entire season on the bench but I can't actually recall ever seeing him play. Instead Murray would bring on a more "experienced" player, like Mullen, and play him out of position.

I just get the impression now that Murray is limited in both his tactical awareness and coaching. If it's not punting it up to Nade, it's playing the same goal kick or diagonal ball to Anderson. Teams wise up to this in the same way that they know if they play with a fast tempo against us and get balls in the box we're not capable of dealing with them.

My thoughts are Murray has September to show he is improving the side or else we need to reconsider his position. We'll have played 7 or the 9 teams and if we can pick up 6 or 7 points from the next 4 games then I don't think any fan would be complaining. This includes trips to 2 grounds where we have been notoriously poor in recent seasons. If it's the same old stuff on the pitch and same same old speel of it then time I'm afraid is up.

Thoughts?

There wasn't - we were doing very well and everyone thought it was a shrewd move. In hindsight, it was a poor decision made a bit hastily. I wish we were so keen to tie down our better players like that.

Our downturn in form occurred only weeks later.

Noticed that Derek Adams is away from Ross County. Wouldn't surprise me if they went after the popular choice for many of our fans, Danny Lennon, for their next appointment. Continued the stability at St Mirren and a national trophy to them.

The seethe on here aimed at our board if/when that happens will be amusing.

I've tried, but I cannot get my head around the dwindling minority of people still supporting Murray! Last season's form would've been enough to get any other manager sacked and I see no improvement at all, we:

  • have not made the correct signings, asides to Cuthbert, Conroy and maybe Nade. Scott, McKeown, Stewart are not up to it and Barr appears to be a mistake. I hear today that we are in for David Smith at Hearts but that smacks of desperation to me.
  • Struggled badly against a Forfar team we should have easily dispatched within 90 mins.
  • were utterly woeful against Dunfermline
  • beat Dumbarton at home after a struggle in the first half - they have been easily beaten in every game so far.
  • beat Alloa - we beat them last season as well, hardly a mark of progress.
  • Were humiliated against Hearts
  • Were thrashed by Dundee. No-one seriously expected to win these games but at least give them a run for their money.

Add all that on top of last seasons form and it is utterly incredulous that he is still in the job. Losing to Cowdenbeath on Saturday is surely the last straw for everyone?

If there is any hope for us with Murray - Saturday is a MUST WIN game, and that has to be followed by a positive performance against Rangers and taking something from Livingston (A) and Falkirk (H) in the next games.

If we cannot do this then we have clearly not moved on from last season and it has to be see you later Murray.

davie mcgurn to go out on loan due to not getting game time with us to progress his recovery from injury. any loan move will have a return to raith clause at any given time.

good move i reckon, as cuthbert for me hasnt really done anything wron gin any games weve played, its mainly his defence thats made the mistakes.

A mistake is probably the wrong word to use. I think unfortunate is a better term. He's always looked a class act against us, offering both solid attacking and defensive qualities. I was reading on twitter that he said that he's seen a specialist who'll give him a time frame shortly. Apparently his injury hasn't been seen before in an adult, only with kids (a bit of bone in his knee) so he has no idea how it'll turn out.

Paper talk saying David Smith looks to be on his way back to us ... Unsure how i feel about this, if we are making any signings it should be full back cover or a striker who has scored at this level, not really sure why we need another midfielder/attacker/striker who cant score ...

Which papers? Did hearts really feel that sorry for us?

Small extract about Smith: "Kilmarnock are interested in taking Robinson, known to his team-mates as ‘Pum’, to Rugby Park, whilst Raith Rovers are thought to be keen on Smith."

Hmm. I was always relatively unimpressed by Smith when he was with us, he was incredbly ball greedy and had little end product. He's always been better with Hearts whenever I've watched him though.

Some competition for the wide spots will be novel. It's taken Murray over two years but he appears to have got there.
