paul-r-cfc
Have you done some work experience in a school? If so can whoever you've been shadowing do it. Yeah I've been in my old school and plan on going back for a bit next year but just thought I'd be best with an academic reference seen as I'd be just out of uni

Nutz_the_Squirrel
This might not count but I'm starting an OU Social Work degree at the end of the month. I graduated with a BA Applied Social Sciences in 2004 (I didn't stay for honours due to becoming a Dad after my first year and money being an issue). I started working as a support worker with adults who have learning difficulties and mental health issues and have been doing this job since. The drawback I have is that there's no opportunity for career progression unless I go into management which I don't want to do. I enjoy working with people who have disabilities so I decided to go for the social work degree. It's part time and will take a few years but I managed to get a fee grant so it's all been paid for and I can still work full time. I'm slightly nervous as I haven't studied (aside from a pish SVQ3) for over a decade but I'm looking forward to it. From a financial point of view, a qualified social worker starts on £10k more per year than I make. More importantly though, I think I have the correct personal skills and experience to do the job. Good luck mate, sounds like you have got a good background which will set yourself in good stead when you graduate. The OU SW degree is really hard going and make sure you put away some money before you go on placements.

I've transfered my previous diphe from Strathclyde and started my first ou module in October. It's working well for me. You just have to try and not fall behind which so far I haven't. My first assignment was my first piece academic work in 8 years. I got 69. Submitted my second one yesterday.

scottsdad
When I was at uni there was no online releasing of grades - they were put up on the course notice board. A table of registration numbers and grades. As I loved close to the uni it was fine - drive in during the holidays and keep an eye out. Must have been a nightmare for people living further away. Now it's online. Ours get released this week and I'm expecting a few difficult meetings with students later in the week.

Killiesquirrel
Got an interview for both Glasgow Caley and UWS for second year. UWS is probably my main choice as it's sports journalism and it's sports that I want to focus on. Also, a 15 minute drive down the road helps! Hoping I get in.
Killiesquirrel
That'll be multimedia journalism at GCU then? Currently in third year and loving it mate. Hope the interview goes well for you - when is it? If you've got any questions feel free to send them over. Is so mate. Doubt I'll go to GCU though, they rejected me for second year entry. Not wanting to go back to first year as I'll feel like I've wasted a year!
10menwent2mow
How is the multi-media journalism at Caley and who's leading the course these days???
Killiesquirrel
Well that's understandable. May end up applying for 3rd year though if I don't get into uws for second year. I'll complete my HND. What's the course like?
10menwent2mow
Aye it was Garner when I was there. Was in the first intake, let's just say my views on that course are very different but I guess it will have evolved over the years. We were the unfortunate guinea pigs I guess.
10menwent2mow
Either that or you have higher standards than I do. I don't think so. I actually looked up the course a couple of years ago and it did look to have evolved very well. I guess technology will have improved a lot since I was there and that will always help a course of this nature. There were just quite a lot of broken promises for us and we generally felt a bit let down by it. The only aspects I felt were enjoyable were the TV and Radio parts of the course. I'm glad they have learned from their mistakes though, a lot of us just got the feeling they were making it up as they went along.

underdogunderdog underdog
Fair play to anyone with the discipline to do a degree through the OU. Don't think I could ever manage it personally I'm in my last year of Open Uni degree. I did my HNC and HND at college first of all. I got accepted for 3rd year at uni but opted for Open Uni as the college I attended has links to OU. I regret it partly as it is hard to get motivated as only have one 3 hour lecture a week.
Big Fifer
First semester results back for 2nd year Chem Eng and I've averaged a 67 which I'm delighted with. Thought having a year out would be detrimental but thankfully the opposite, in a good place financially which has given me a lot of motivation. Hopefully drag that above the 70 mark by the end of May.

You've obviously worked really hard.
lionel hutz
Still Waiting to hear back from Dundee for Law and Strathclyde for Politics - does anyone know how long they usually take.
Louis Litt
Still Waiting to hear back from Dundee for Law and Strathclyde for Politics - does anyone know how long they usually take. No clue about Strathclyde but when I applied Dundee were the last to get back to me, mid March/early April. Spoke to folk last year and it was the exact same too, m8.
