Who's Going To Uni?

Recommended Posts

Really? I find the socialists to be incredibly noisy at Glasgow. There were alot of candidates from the "OurGlasgow" campaign, I don't know much about them, but they seem like the mad anti-cuts end of the socialists.

Perhaps it's just because I spend most of my time either at the GUU or in the Law Building, but I can honestly say I hardly ever see the lefties any more. I don't even remember having heard of this Our Glasgow lot.

Basically all those who came campaigning at my door said the same thing about wanting fees abolished for English students, most were English and did just mention English as if they couldn't care about anyone else. I tried to explain to one guy that although I agreed that education should be universally free, I thought it wasn't in the interest of any Scottish person because our Government would be paying for others. He genuinely almost started crying.

In the end I just voted for the most normal sounding Scottish people, struggled to find many though.

That's a shit argument. We pay for EU students.

Who is president of the GUU? I think it used to be/still is somebody who was the year below me at school and an utter, utter c**t.

Two years ago it was Colin Woods (don't really know). In the year just passed it was Chris Sibbald (quite amusing but bit of a w****r). After the recent elections it's now Davie Lockhart (good guy).

Was at Stirling University on Wednesday for a friends birthday and despite the shitehole accommodation it has the most beautiful campus I've ever visited. I'd heard lots of criticism from people that had attended the open days and moved elsewhere blaming the campus but I don't see what people had a problem with.

I think it takes a certain type of person to stand for these uni elections and you've just described him. Full of self importance, like winning it will make him a better person. It won't. By the time he leaves (which I'm guessing won't be far off because it's never first or second years that stand?) no one will remember his name (ridiculous as it is) and it'll be an entry on his CV that will be skimmed past to get to the important bits like experience - of which there will be none because he was too busy trying to look special by standing for election. They're always entirely middle class people that will end up at Daddy's Firm where he'll never do a day's work in his unimportant little life.

Or perhaps I've just got a little too irritated by his name.

"Max" is short for "Maximillian". Take from that what you will.

I've loved the campus, but never stayed within the main blocks of flats. Overall, I've had a good time at uni here, although it is a bit quieter now I'm spending half the time in the library. Stirling's good because it is small enough to constantly bump into people who you know, but not small enough to see them all of the time.

On that note, I'm sure I saw someone on p&b at the desk in front of me in the library a few weeks back, but wasn't sure.

I'm certain they didn't win any of the contested seats. They did get the gender equality officer I think, that was unopposed though.

A guy I have spoken to a couple of times from OurGlasgow was running for College of Arts convenor, why would I want an anti-cuts mentalist representing my college! I want someone representing the people in the college!

Don't know Crema.

It's sort of annoying me that the far-left seem to be dominating university elections at the moment. It seems that the extreme leftist groups are the most politically mobile and get their followers to vote in a way that other political viewpoints seem unable to do.

The SRC election at Glasgow was the same.

Er, the SRC guys were left wing?

Hmm, I think I voted for the ginger guy. Dunno what he stands for, these people are totally irrelevant. I saw him in a club once and even his groupies were pish.

Incidentally, lefties are okay, but temporary extremists are the worst! We've all met them, they've tumbled out of private school, having never worked a day in their puff, and with the aid of daddy's chequebook, have bought themselves a beret and joined the socialist party. Suddenly they are the loudest and most committed protesters there can be, and they never fucking shut up about it. Give it a year though, and they will have moved on to something else like extreme environmentalism, or libertariansim, or some other fashionable pish. Now THEY are fucking annoying.

It's noticed that too. It's a bit of a rebellion thing I think, their parents would hate them being marxists and that's exactly why they do it.

If you come from a poorer background your parents aren't likely to give a shit how Marxist you are.

No, he finished third. Voted for him simply because he had the most amusing manifesto.

Wish I'd known, joke candidates ftw.

I want someone who treats the post with the contempt it deserves.

Whenever I voted I always chose 'reopen nominations' in the hope that some tit would have to do their campaign all over.

Turnout at Strathclyde was only 11.5%. Good.

That's pretty high, I'm sure Glasgow as boasting about 2% last year.

That's a shit argument. We pay for EU students.

Relevance?

The Scottish gvt doesn't have to pay for English students - by virtue of Scottish students being free - and for that reason alone shouldn't.

Who makes up these posts?

Er, anyway, I got my first 100% coursework thing back and it was A4 - bumped up from A5 cool.gif

Still don't know how to make a pleasing gif though. And my second 100% coursework, research methods, is easily the biggest pile of w**k I have ever come across in my life.

Research onion? FFS. It's the kind of thing that would only be useful if you want to do a PhD.

You have your country. The English have not taken it.

The British have. If students from the RCDU want the same rights as other EU students, perhaps they should look a bit closer to home, at their own government. Oh, and maybe if we were given the same status as other EU countries, things would be a bit more fair all round. f**k the Union Jack, we want our country back!

The British have.

How? Last time I checked Scotland still exists, has the same rights to self-determination as any other people and has its own Parliament with powers commensurate of the referendums upon which they have voted to date.

If students from the RCDU want the same rights as other EU students, perhaps they should look a bit closer to home, at their own government.

Oh you mean the Westminster government which doesn't allow Universities to discriminate against Scottish students in determining what fees they may charge? You know, the Westminster government whose Universities take-in MORE students from disadvantaged backgrounds than the Scottish Universities despite having fees, because the real thing that affects accessibility is maintenance payments through the loans/grant system, where students in England have a MASSIVE advantage over those in Scotland? Okay.

Oh, and maybe if we were given the same status as other EU countries, things would be a bit more fair all round. f**k the Union Jack, we want our country back!
