It's English pies, they're just not very good.

Except pork pies obviously.

True. I was working in Preston a couple of years ago. The locals were raving about meat and potato pies from a local bakery. I tried them and they were shite. Horrible short crust pastry, slimy mashed potatoes and a tiny sliver of meat.

I'm on holiday in London right now. Wherever I go I always try the local cuisine. So I went for some Pie, Mash and Liquor with a side order of Jellied Eels.

I went to F Cooke, a proper old school place with white tiles on the walls and sawdust on the floor.

The pies were alright, though not as good as a pie from most butchers or bakeries in Scotland. The eels weren't as rank as I thought they would be. Really just fish, but with a slightly tough texture.

Never taken to eels, find you spend ages chewing on them.

Pie and mash however is great, was that the one in Hoxton. The Manze in Tower Bridge is very good, probably my favourite.

Yeah. It was in Hoxton. Pretty tricky to find but worth it. I'll never have it again but I'm glad that I tried it.

Just stuck a bbq dry rubbed brisket into the sous vide, where it shall remain at 68 degC until tomorrow night.

Might be controversial, but I think sous vide meat is absolutely shite. Consistent internal cooking yes, but flavour absolutely nowhere near good enough, unless it’s been cooked prior in some other way or finished in a pan after the sous vide is finished, and even then I’d prefer it wasn’t in the sous vide at all.

Aye it needs to be pan or grill finished for sure and probably for the likes of a steak its pointless. For being able to do stuff for like 36 hours though its the only option. Likes of brisket fir example IMO its the best way

Went to Christies in Falkirk tonight. Scottish tapas. No idea why I havent been before, think I had lazily looked at the menu and found it uninspiring.

The place is superb. Food is excellent. A good idea very well executed

Magic eh?

Just have to hope our posts don’t attract the scum/vermin that inhabit this online holding pen of reprobates to our Christies.

I’m lucky enough to be spending 4 nights in Falkirk courtesy of work soon. Where am I eating on the company expenses? suggestions most welcome.

1 night will likely be the teahouse, 3 more nights to fill.

Would like a decent Indian one night.

Aye, Christies, Sanam for yer Indian. The Gulnar is good but the Sanam takes it by a whisker for me. 1 day left...... Have a look at Croft and Creel, i've no been yet but heard good things. If you prefer something a bit less heavy one night Sumo is excellent too.

ETA just minded Ciro's Italian at Glenbervie Golf Course is very good also.
