The OP
Coprolite was probably being facetious but you'd think people on a Scottish football forum would already be aware of a disease Jimmy Johnstone had and Fernando Ricksen has.

This equates to roughly £310 per head, per year. Why not just pay £26pm each more in tax so we don't have to suffer people wanting sponsored for growing a beard, walking round a park in a onesie etc? Good in theory, but the goverment would spend the extra money on other things, like more railways for London and nuclear weapons. Even if they did spend it on homelessness, the fannies would just raise awareness/funds for other things.

Something along the lines of an interaction and transaction between individuals where there's no expected reciprocation, such as an altruistic act. For example, giving food or other resources, taking in an orphan, funding a scholarship. 'original point' is ambiguous, granted. It's a human act - if there are two humans, there can be charity. It exists separate from Charities, the Church, the State, and every other formalised collective you might want to mention. On 11/16/2018 at 16:51, virginton said: If enough additional taxes can help the state resolve the main causes of homelessness - which they quite obviously could - then the need of that charitable cause goes away. How much is enough? There will always be charitable causes, and folk/groups running victimhood scams. Perhaps if charity wasn't now so proxy-fied 'out of sight, out of mind', if individuals took more direct responsibility for for being charitable towards their brothers, neighbours, and community, homelessness for example wouldn't be as big a thing. The state being the first port of call when looking for something to blame and for fixes to everything (including things it has a role in breaking) is understandably tempting. Counter-productive past a certain point, but tempting. Do you have some sources for that correlation?
