Maybe a bit mid/late life crisis but the thought of only doing really gentle/genteel stuff fills me with horror. Maybe there are supplements that could help? My gym does a yoga class which they market as "yoga for weight trainers", which is their way of appealing to the younger generations. An hour of stretching that makes every part of your body ache, but feels great afterwards. No idea how much it differs from normal yoga, probably very little.

Assuming the best thing to do is just wait it out, rather than running through the pain. I got shin splints for the first time earlier this year, having been a runner my entire life. Having not run in a couple of months, I blitzed a 10 mile or so in a fairly quick time and my shins were agony the following day. Tried to run through it and failed. Asked on here and the advice was to sit it out. Tried a light jog after about 5 days and the pain came back reasonably quick. Didn't bother again for a couple of weeks and eased myself back into it next time.

AberdeenHibee
Have moved into the city centre so now gyming from 6am-7am 5 days a week! Had a Yoga class this morning after the gym first thing too - I know people have a bit of a "stigma" about Yoga (particularly people my age!) but it honestly is brilliant. The increased flexibility you get through your hamstrings and lower back through Yoga is undoubted/very noticeable and it is quite a refreshing/relaxing form of exercise too. I've been doing 1 session per week for the past 14 weeks and really enjoy it. Edited April 30, 2019 by AberdeenHibee

Ross.
Struggling to get back into the cardio since returning from my holiday. Found myself doing additional weights to make sure I am still in the gym an acceptable amount of time. Really need to power through a session or two on the bike and treadmill and just force myself back to the routine I had been in.
cameron2000
Suffering with shin splints for the first time. Assuming the best thing to do is just wait it out, rather than running through the pain.I’ve had shin splints a couple of times in the past and I’m now taking preventative measures to remove this issue completely. There really is nothing more annoying when you are feeling absolutely fine CV wise and then the burning starts to creep into the shins. I would suggest finding a cardio exercise that doesn’t put excessive pressure on the Tibialis anterior and Gastrocnemius for a short period of time (1-2 weeks). Exercises such as cycling, Recumbent bike and the cross-trainer are ideal (rowing machine often causes flare ups due to the pressure when pushing off). Shin splints can occur for a number of reasons but some are more common than others. Regardless, it is important to strengthen the muscles that support the shins. The most obvious exercise is calf raises. I would suggest doing 3 sets of these once a day, starting at whatever you can manage and building up each day until you can do 30 reps with both legs at the same time. Once this has been achieved try using only 1 leg at a time and build up to 30 on each leg in the same way. Weak Hamstrings are also a cause of shin splints so Hamstring exercises may be required. The recumbent bike and cross trainer also work this muscle. Flat feet can put excessive pressure on the shins. Insoles that add an arch to support the foot may be required. I have a pair of insoles for all of my shoes as I am completely flat footed. Hope that this is useful in some way.

Feeling a lot better today, so going to get into the gym after work and get on the bike. Didn't think about the calves, so will certainly add the calf raises in.
