The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty

Saw this a few days ago. Having read a few reviews prior to its release I wasn't expecting much, but this turned out to be a wee gem. The locations really made it for me, Greenland and the Himalay were just stunning. Definitely one to see on a big screen.

8/10

Just watched the 'Rambo' version of Judge Dredd for the first time on TV, I knew there was a reason I left it 20 (?) years, I used to be a big 2000AD fan and was, in P & B terms 'seething' that Stallone was cast in the role of Joe Dredd. 20 years later I ain't exactly seething but I'm glad I didn't spend a farthing or whatever it was in 90's money going to the moving pictures to watch it.

The Wolf Of Wall Street

The new black comedy directed by Martin Scorsese, set in frantic, anything-goes 1990s Wall Street, following one man's illegitimate pursuit of wealth. It's as decadent, relentless and shocking as Scorsese's most notorious works, but vulgar in its absence of morals rather than its violence. Nevertheless, on the surface the film's main attribute is definitely the fall-about-laughing factor.

Terence Winter's screenplay based on Jordan Belfort's memoir is simply gold standard. It's a constant larger than life escalation of excitement and hysteria that works perfectly in the experienced hands of the old master behind the camera. On paper a comedy this long about someone so despicable is very hard to pull off but not only does it work, it made me laugh more than almost any other first viewing of a comedy I can remember.

One thing Scorsese does better than any other great director is get the best out of his cast. There are over 20 top performances in the film; no one is miscast, although I would love to have seen more of Jean Dujardin: it's not often Marty under-uses his talent, but he had so much of it some of them had to sacrifice screen time. Leonardo Di Caprio and Jonah Hill have terrific, very natural chemistry right from the start, and are every bit as effective in their roles as Liotta and Pesci 13 years ago.

My slight gripe is that the film comes to rather an abrupt and perhaps predictable end. It doesn't ruin the preceding 3 hours but it wasn't among the great Scorsese endings, and Wolf probably doesn't belong among the great Scorsese films.

9/10

Who were Liotta and Pesci playing 13 years ago?

ETA: I presume you mean Goodfellas, which was released 24 year ago. I thought for a second there was a film I'd missed out on!

Kick Ass 2 - 3/10. Just unbelievably bad after enjoying the first one so much. I thought the acting was terrible, it wasnt funny and the script was really poor.

12 Years A Slave - 8/10. My main feeling was that I was slightly disappointed I wasnt engrossed in it like I thought I should have been. I was into it but not glued to it. The stand out for me in this film has definitely got to be Michael Fassbender, just unbelievable stuff from him. The accent was perfect, the intensity was there. Just a job well done. Chiwitel Eijofor does a great job as Solomon Northup but I didnt think he done as good a job as Fassbender.

12 Years a Slave - 6/10

It's a fantastic film, and an incredibly important piece of cinema. The cast are outstanding, Fassbender in particular. However, I just found it too brutal to enjoy. The brutality and intensity are just relentless. Some of the scenes were just nauseating, however i'm guessing that's the whole point. It's educational, but not entertaining. Not my cup of tea.

Devil's Due - 1/10

Just an utter crock of shit. Just awful. It's just completely unoriginal and adds absolutely nothing to the genre. Even the basics were executed poorly. Avoid at all costs.

I agree with this. I also thought the ending was a bit sharp.

Brad Pitt arrives, he tells his story, goes home and cries.

Not sure what I was expecting and I know it's based on the real Solomon's memoirs but I thought it was too quick.

My bad. I just wish it was 13 years ago so I could have been around to see it.

Rewatched The Flash tv film for the first time in years (going to try and find the 2nd film with Mark Hamill) despite being from 1990 it actually holds up not too bad and the costume still looks good

I watched The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou last night and absolutely loved it. Having looked around on the web it seems to be a very divisive film. If you go with it then you'll probably end up adoring it like I did. If you don't then you'll probably find it very frustrating but it's well worth watching in order to find out.

If you haven't seen any of Anderson's other work I thoroughly recommend Rushmore and The Royal Tenebaums. His new film "Grand Budapest Hotel" is also out very soon and looks decent.

I watched a documentary other day called "The Jeffery Dahmer Files" on Netflix other night. Thoroughly recommend. Interviews the detective who dealt with Dahmer, his ex neighbour and the fella who dealt with the bodies. Really interesting watch. Oddly has little dramatised sections of an actor plating Dahmer buying acid, vats and mooching about but works well. 8/10.

Yeah I saw The Royal Tenenbaums a few years back and loved it as well, I've been meaning to give it a watch again tbh. I'm definitely gonna check out Rushmore if I get the chance as well keeping an eye out for Anderson's new film.

Wolf of Wall Street - too long. Tries too hard to be funny, and fails most off the time. It's not a particularly interesting plot either. Money man goes corrupt, parties, gets jailed. Guid ane. Still a watchable film. 6.5/10

That's me now seen Taxi Driver, Goodfella's and the above and found none of them to be that great.

I don't like Di Caprio either. He's a w**k.

Disagree entirely. I didn't think it felt like three hours, though strangely I feel it ended rather abruptly. Found it fairly funny for what it was and the whole cinema was laughing. Plus, Di Caprio is the fucking boy.
