Anvil! The Story of Anvil - 8/10

Really enjoyed this. The comparisons to Spinal Tap are huge, the difference being this is real. Which makes the whole thing a bit sad, although there are a few laugh out loud moments - when asked why they're not getting recognition, the drummer says "I can sum that up in one word. Two words. No, three words. We don't have good management".

My enjoyment of the movie was enhanced by the drunk bam sitting behind me, who shouted "ANVIL!" at the start of every trailer, then when that fake viagra advert came on (the one where the guys pulls a rat out of his mouth), he shouted "Fucking rat, ya c**t!"

Who Killed Nancy?

A bit of a waste of time. Some interesting evidence, very little archive footage and none of the relevant music.

The Class

Very well made and impressive in most aspects. Thought provoking as well and even managed to give me flashbacks to my schooldays which weren't very recent at all. However, I'm surprised at the level of hype as I fail to see how it's the masterpiece many people are making it out to be.

Having missed Hunger when it was out at the cinema, I finally got around to watching it last night after it's release on DVD in the past week or so.

Story covers the hunger strikes in The Maze in 1981, focusing on Bobby Sands in particular. Really powerful film that is broken down well and introduces Sands at the right time. Only real dialogue comes in the form of an extensive scene between Sands and a priest, that is fantastic. It then moves onto the last part of the movie which is basically the physical effects of the strike on Sands himself. The first part of the movie focuses on the treatment received by the prisoners. Some pretty graphic stuff and it's hard not to feel sick when you see the shit stained cell walls. Plenty of time to think during the film as well at some scenes that seem overly long though!

The film gives a pretty good insight into life inside the prison and certainly makes you think.

The Day the Earth Stood Still ( 2008 )

I don't see the need for this update at all. It's not as if the first movie needed great CGI to get it's story across. It was a classic sci-fi movie, helped by the fact that there was hardly anything about it. Everything was a lot more ominous. This new remake isn't helped by the need to make everything bigger and "better". It doesn't work that way, and the original story is tarnished in a big way as a result. The worst example is the spacecraft. A simple ship in the original did it's job. The new one basically made to "wow" the audience. Ridiculous.

Lets ignore the fact that it's a remake and actually judge it as a movie. Keanu Reeves isn't a bad choice really, as the role required no acting and got none. An actual actor could have ruined the role big time, considering the way the movie was done. It's no surprise that the only time I felt any real threat in the movie is when the big b*****d of an alien was involved and you hardly ever seen that thing. As a standalone movie, it's decent. It's nothing special and it doesn't deliver any thrills or scares, but it keeps the attention long enough. Thumbs in the middle.

Gran Torino ( 2008 )

It's no wonder Walt is the way he is. His family are all a bunch of hangers on and leechers. His character is absolutely tremendous. Some of the stuff he comes away with is absolutely terrific. Then again, no surprise, as Eastwood has always been terrific at building characters around their circumstances. This is a really good movie, and most of it is nicely understated. The climatic showdown is more tense than it has any right to be as well. The usual good Eastwood movie.

WALL.E ( 2008 )

What an absolute joy. An emotional rollercoaster if ever I've seen one. Time to add this to the list of movies that has made me blub. Deserves full marks for the first 40 minutes alone. I considered anything good after that as a bonus, but they actually managed to top it with some absolutely beautiful scenes. WALL.E. and EVE might be the best film couple ever. One of the easiest scores I've ever had to give.

Aztec Rex 2/10

Very poor special effects, the dinosaur looked like a child had designed it. The only good thing in the movie was the main female was semi clad for the entire thing, don't know her name but she later found fame as Katja Kinski in Neighbours.

The Strangers ( 2008 )

The makers of this movie seem to think that all you need is a mask and some mystery and the movie must instantly be good. Reality check needed, as this is utter shite. No tension. No horror. No scares. No reason to care. Throw in some of the old cliches ( which are badly done at that ) and you really have no need for this movie.

Waxwork II: Lost in Time (1992) - 3/10 Just terrible, but the odd mark for being so shit you laugh. Lost will to watch about half way through, it seemed like it went on forever. Shame as the first one was quite enjoyable!

Vanilla Sky (2001) - 5/10 What a pointless movie, obvious twist that could be seen a mile off. Points for the comedy moment of the stereotypical Cruise effects of slow running, slow falling and blatantly standing on a box.

He truly is a man child.

Rachel Getting Married ( 2008 )

Anne Hathaway is a revelation in this. The whole movie is fine for what it is. I can't really see anything that could be different here. It's basically a story about the sister of Rachel coming out of rehab and atoning for her past, which is rocky to say the least. And it basically just goes from there. It isn't a crazy rollercoaster or thrill a minute ride. It's just a good story.

Mulholland Drive

Typically unfathomable David Lynch stuff but absolutely enthralling just the same. 2 and a half hours long but felt like half that - sign of a great film in my opinion.

JUst watched Southland Tales by Richard Kelly, the guy who did Donnie Darko. W.....T.......F.

I have no idea what I just watched tbh, it was all a bit strange although there is a great line in there "I'm a Pimp. Pimps don't commit suicide"

I always try and get to see the well known movies. Anyways ...

The Southland Tales

Am I the only one who's been pleasantly surprised by Justin Timberlake when he acts ? He certainly does a better job than The Rock and Sarah Michelle Gellar. The movie itself is weird, but also to the point of idiocy at times. The weirdness is enough to keep you glued at times because you aren't left bored too much, but I still can't rate it highly, because there are times when the story becomes almost non-existant.

Southland Tales - ?/10

Watched it on Sunday morning, not actually sure what to make of it. From the director of Donny Darko, it was pretty fragmented, despite having a reasonable cast. Even the ending didn't really make too much sense and reveal what the fucking hell the point of the film was.

Has anyone else watched the film and can shed some light on it?

Mostly covers my feelings about the film as well.

Despite watching it twice I still couldn't tell you what the point in the film was or what it was really about.
