What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

The Hobbit - 8/10. Wasn't sure how they would flesh it out to 3 films,. but this was for the most part good and enjoyable.. The wizard with the shit on his face annoyed me though, Peter Jackson's Jar Jar Binks imo.

Went back and watched the extended edition Lord of the Rings Trilogy, which I have had for years and never got round to watching. 10/10. It really is amazing the depth of the trilogy, the planning involved and the fact they pulled it off, thinking about it.

A History of Violence

Had this on the sky + box for a while and just got round to watching it last night, have to say I was dissapointed , had heard very good things about it but kind of felt the whole thing lacked something, some good performances especially from Maria Bello(sexy as hell in itwub.gif)and a all too short performance by William Hurt, but on the whole the film never gripped me the way I thought it would. 6/10

Killer Joe

Not convinced by this at all. Matthew McConaughey is intense as f**k as the stone cold hitman. He basically carries the movie on his back while he is involved, while whenever he isn't involved, and this makes up far too much of the movie, is just a bit uninteresting. The really unfortunate thing is that Joe Cooper's character is actually really well done, and the performance is as good as the writing has allowed it to be. It's a shame that it's the only character that's half way interesting.

John Carter

Can't rate it as I got about an hour in and had to turn it off, some of the worst acting I have ever seen. Utterly terrible

Watched an hour of Twilight , when it was on the other night . That was all I could manage , it's truly one of the worst films I have ever seen ( and I've watched Vanilla Sky ). The acting was some of the worst committed to film.

What happens when a vampire is hit by sunlight ? They ignite or crumble , right ? No , they go a bit shiny apparently.

Desperate Measures ( 1998 )

Andy Garcia is an agent. Michael Keaton is a criminal who can save his son with a bone marrow transplant. Keaton is pretty miscast I think. He's basically putting on a low toned voice to try and sound like a hardarse. Doesn't work for me I'm afraid. The actual movie itself is alright, and Keaton gives it a shot. The story is compelling, as Keaton is a man desperate to escape from jail, and does what he can, while Andy Garcia's agent tries to tread the line between helping Keaton out as he needs his help, and keeping him contained. It gets a bit silly as it so often does.

Quartet directed by Dustin Hoffman and starring Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, Michael Gambon and Pauline Collins.

It's about the goings on at a home for retired musiciens and opera singers.

Good entertainment. Connolly was very good.

Boogie Nights - First time seeing this and I had mixed feelings on Wahlbergs performance, sometimes it was great and other times it fell flat. Solid performances from Julianne Moore and Burt Reynolds. 8/10.

I saw the beggining of Blade Runner whilst it was on during Christmas, I vagely remember seeing it once before but this time it really hooked me in, I got uop to the bit where the bloke in glasses has dared Harrison to test his theories on the very pretty replicant with the quiff, and how it took him much longer than usual, to catch her out BECAUSE not even she knew she was one. I'm definatley going to DVD this in the New Year.

I think McConaughey is a fantastic actor but he doesn't seem to get many major films for some reason. Far better than Wahlberg

Going through a big Wes Anderson thing at the moment, tonight I watched The Royal Tenenbaums. I'd forgotten quite how sad that film is in places. Probably my favourite film-maker at the moment, this might be his best. 10/10

Went to see Life of Pi in the cinema today. It took a bit to get into but it was very, very good when it got into it. I felt quite emotional to it towards the end, but as DomDom said, the ending probably isn't suited to everyone's tastes and I did't enjoy it. I reckon they could have stopped it sooner and on a witty line as there was some funny parts in it, but they changed the story a little. It did make sense, and added an extra dimension, but not for me. Probably a 8/10. 9/10. ish.

Sums up how I felt about it, too.

I was expecting something that would challenge Lee's very best work but for me it lies far behind Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Lovely camerawork and special effects and one of the best uses of 3D yet but I think it falls short in its pacing and structure. I'm not sure if it's too long or too short but the timing seemed off, it didn't work for me.

If you're thinking of going to see it, go! Because this film is going to be one that everybody has different opinions on. It's not quite like anything else. Imagine Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours meeting Titanic and Cast Away, with zoo animals, and you're still not close to what you get. Some of the scenes make it a must-see but I can't guarantee you'll like it all.

Cape Fear

Didn't realise this was a remake, very enjoyable. Story is very good and the main four actors here (De Niro, Nolte, Lange and Juliette Lewis) are all fantastic. Very good thriller. If it hadn't been a remake then it'd probably be among my top Scorsese films, with it not being original then it doesn't have as much weight as Goodfellas or Casino.

8/10

The Devil's Double

Wasn't expecting much, enjoyed this quite a bit. Dominic Cooper is very good playing both sides of Uday (Udey?) Hussein. The story near the end gets a bit shit but worth seeing for his performance, IMO.

Quiz Show

The film that took a place right next to Forrest Gump, Shawshank, Pulp Fiction and Four Weddings at the 1994 Oscars, and for all it's a nice drama I can't agree with that decision. Very gripping, and makes a strong statement, but as a film I thought it was neither here nor there. Robert Redford skipped the queue to beat Frank Darabont for a Best Director nom, not the best directing job I've ever seen, although the guy surely can put a cast together. With Fiennes and Turturro cast beautifully into real-life roles that could have been custom-written for them, and the likes of Mira Sorvino and Hank Azaria on the fringes, to the familiar faces of Rob Morrow, Alan Rich and Christopher McDonald, even Martin Scorsese and Barry Levinson in bit-parts, it's a feast of great acting. And last, but by no means least, I'm very glad Paul Scofield got his nomination for Best Supporting Actor, very well deserved.

Don't rush out to buy it. It's a shame this film took a place that could have been occupied by The Lion King, Leon, Shallow Grave or Ed Wood but in its own right it's not in any way bad, just a bit of a disappointment under the circumstances. Taking that into account,

The Hobbit

I did enjoy it, but I thought it took far too long to get going. Unfortunately, I can't put my finger on it, but thought it was missing something that the LotR films had. The scene with Bilbo and Gollum was the stand out for me.

This was also the 48fps screening, which took a good 15-20 for my eyes to adjust to. At first things almost seemed sped up when folk were moving, but you gradually realise it's because there's no blurring of the image. It looks beautiful at times, but in almost a backwards step, things like CGI which had been almost becoming un-noticable in 24fps, now stand out very obviously.
