Last Book You Read....

I'm currently reading "1812: Napoleon's Fatal March on Moscow" by Adam Zamoyski.

Not a topic I knew anything about, I'm really enjoying it but finding it quite heavy going---not because the writing is poor, but just because there's only so much unrelenting horror and suffering that I can handle in a single sitting. I'd highly recommend reading it, but its not for the easily upset!

Next up is one of the eighteen million books I got given/bought at Christmas. Not sure where to start, really...

Extremely interesting to read and learn about what life was like for the children of executed former leaders within the soviet union after the death of stalin. (8/10)

I seldom read fiction, however recently finished A Tale Etched In Blood And Hard Black Pencil by Christopher Brookmyre and really enjoyed it.

A splendid read, one of my favourite books ever, although you do have to be of a certain age to appreciate it fully.

Any audiobook recommendations? I've got Audible on my Kindle Fire and think it'll be good when travelling etc but not sure what to go for. I don't want to go for books I want to read as I reckon listening to them will be very different.

Any one listen to books regularly??

A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle. I've read a lot of the short stories but none of the novels, got a Kindle Fire HD for Christmas and downloaded the complete Sherlock Holmes collection for free. Excellent read and looking forward to the rest of them.

Porno - Irvine Welsh

Sequel to Trainspotting which focuses on Sick Boy's plan to become rich by becoming a porn director.

Doesn't hit the heights (or depths if you want to look at it that way) that Trainspotting does but is still an excellent read.

Has anyone read Ecstacy or Maribou Stork Nightmares? Recommended?

I thought Porno was a poor follow up to be honest. Apart from the one laugh out loud scene that see's Sick Boy send gay porn to Begbie in jail I really didn't find it that entertaining or provocative.

Maribou Stork Nightmares is easily his best novel in my opinion. Very dark and not nearly as humorous as a lot of his other stuff, but I thought it was incredibly well written and dealt with the subjects at hand very well.

As far as Welsh goes, I think his short stories are far better than his novels.

I've been reading a lot of Ian Rankin recently, as my missus sister is a fan and had all the Rebus books lying around. Saves me paying a fortune to buy English language books over here. Also read a little Anthony Bourdain(Gone Bamboo) which was fairly enjoyable for light reading. I also have a copy of Christopher Brookmyres "When the Devil Drives"(Signed by the Pie & Bovril legend himself at a recent talk he gave in Zurich) to get started on when I finish what I'm currently reading. Someone else mentioned it didn't have the humour of his previous work, which is true of the previous book "Where the Bodies are Buried", but I still found it a pretty good read.

The 'age box' is definitely ticked at this end..........

Should I consider reading any other Mr Brookmyre's efforts then.......?

You definitely should. If that's the only one you've read, go back to the beginning with Quite Ugly One Morning and work through the Jack Parlabane stories. Incredibly funny dark crime humour.

Edit to add: Read These Three Guys by Jim Johnston. Don't bother. It's anticlimactic, there's little threads of the story that seem to go nowhere because the impact of their conclusion is non-existent. I got it on the Kindle. If it comes up in your recommendations, just skip it. It's pointless.

Just finished "When the Devil Drives" last night (on my kindle :D ). Good read but none of the dark humour you refer to that is the hallmark of all his other books I've read.

The third book in that series is out later this year. Already available for pre-order on Kindle. :D

They're very, very mixed. The good ones are great, the going-through-the-motions ones are just rubbish.

The Sign of the Four is a masterpiece.

I've read a couple of books since Christmas.

Firstly, Something To tell You by Hanif Kureishi. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the characters were all well written and the story plods along pretty well. The story of a middle aged Psychoanalyst and the events which shaped his life as he struggles to come to term with middle age. An excellent read with plenty of twists and turns that keep you gripped throughout. I'll definitely be getting a hold of Buddah Of suburbia sometime soon.

Secondly,The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thomson. I'd already seen the film based on the book so I knew alot of the plot twists but it was still a very enjoyable read, the only issue I had with it is that it's quite short.

This is a fair comment. I recently decided to re-read( first read them quite some time ago) the Sherlock Holmes stories, and I was genuinely surprised at just how bad some of them were. :(
