Sons' sorrow

It also confirms we are highly unlikely to ever see him play again, at Dumbarton. Really disappointing given how he started the first couple of months with us.

It's not a disappointment though, is it? He had a couple of decent appearances in a shite team then very quickly exposed himself as being utterly rotten. It's absolutely the right thing to be rid and I'd refer you to my post of a few months ago that he'll be playing at junior or lower level before long.

Utterly rotten is a bit harsh.

He showed promise. He had a few poor games, as many young players do. It happened when we were playing poorly as a team and the manager dropped him because he wasn't showing enough. That hit his confidence and he allowed himself to get out of shape. Also stopped playing without fear and that took a lot from what he did well when he was playing well.

He could still be a decent player, but he needs to get fitter based on his latter performances with us and he needs to focus. He can't contribute unless he's fit and willing to take control of the ball and look to use it. Passing the ball back to teammates behind him and not running at opponents takes a lot from what he potentially offered at the start of his Sons career.

A long time back I wrote on here that sometimes people's perceptions of a player are similar to how a high handicap golfer tends to view their shots, ie they mistake the eight mediocre shots from every ten as the aberration, when in fact it's the two decent ones that are.

Sincerely no disrespect to Calum, but IMO that has been his ratio at DFC.

This guy gets it.

Well it is when you consider how his Dumbarton career started which ultimately culminated in a League 1 POTM award. It’s extremely disappointing how it’s panned out after we rewarded him with an extended contract and it looked like we had a real prospect on our hands.

I don’t think Wilson is a bad player, I actually thought he was badly mismanaged after a dip in form when the team fell to bits. Perhaps his excellent first month or two was a flash in the pan at that level, maybe he’s just lost his way a bit. His fitness clearly isn’t the best and that’s something he needs to work on but he does have some good attributes in amongst the lack of fitness and potential poor attitude.

I see we've called up a young midfielder named Luca Vata from the U-18's on amateur forms and he'll be in the squad at Forfar tomorrow.

I wish the lad well and I'm wondering if he is related to Rudo Vata the ex-Celtic player.

He is indeed. Luca is Rudi's nephew.

DFC 150th Anniversary Year - Hall Of Fame Presentation Evening

A major event in the anniversary year calendar will take place on the evening of Friday 24th February at the stadium, when the remaining tranche of nominated players, officials and team groups will be formally inducted into the club's Hall Of Fame.  They will then join the members of the 1972 Second Division Championship-winning team and Murdo McLeod, all of whom were inducted previously at last year's '72 dinner, to complete the inaugural complement.  A commemorative board is being very kindly sponsored by a supporter of longstanding and this will be displayed in due course.

120 tickets are available for supporters to attend what promises to be an enjoyable evening.  They are priced at £10 per ticket and this includes a finger buffet -following the presentation ceremony there will be the opportunity chance to socialise and reminisce with the 50-plus former players and officials who have already accepted their invitation to attend.

At this stage anyone wishing to attend is encouraged to register interest by submitting an Email to dumbarton150@gmail.com with the relevant info.  Payment details and the uplift of tickets will be advised in the near future.

I refer you to OK III's post. He's able to put it much more fairly and poetically than me. Personally I'm comfortable saying he's shite.

It’s slightly concerning me that we are 2 weeks into January and we are resorting to promoting youngsters from the u18s to bulk up the match day squad. I’d heard there were due to be a few trialists playing in the cancelled Pollok friendly but the fact we are playing them as trialists before offering any deals would suggest they maybe aren’t good enough to warrant us offering them a contract outright.

We are in a fantastic position at the minute and strengthening that position really should have been in the works for a good while before January rolled around. Maybe we’ll see a couple of trialists on the bench today and this youngster is the second coming of Chris Turner. As it stands we seem to be getting weaker with injuries and suspensions whilst those around us, including today’s opponents, have already strengthened.

On paper that's an absolutely superb bit of business. Big Rusty McLean has terrorised us for Montrose and Peterhead over the years. I know he can be a bit inconsistent and tricky to get a tune out of, but that's a signing that's got me genuinely excited. I've liked him as a player for years.

Good scoring record in previous seasons.

Why is he not getting a game for rock bottom of the table Peterhead side though?

He's been injured most of the season, then got sent off in only his second game back. I'm guessing their new boss is having a bit of a clearout now.

Fair enough, it does sound like a bit of a gamble with all of those injury problems.

Hopefully he can stay fit for us at least until the end of the season.

If so, he could be a great bit of business. Fingers crossed
