DiegoDiego
Went to get a tuk tuk this morning which costs 2,500FG, but the first two with space said they didn't have change. I was stood there waiting for another when a security guard got my attention and pointed to a woman sat down about ten metres behind me. She asked if I needed money for the tuk tuk, I told her I was fine, but she handed me 2,500 anyway. I then tried to give her a 2,000 note I had but she refused to accept it. Absolutely no need for her to have helped me out. Can't say I'd have done the same. Trying to be a bit less of a c**t to everyone today as a result.

I'd have said this sounds like some sort of con but obviously not. Does this type of thing happen often?

No, but Guinea has the most polite, calm and pleasant people in the region, really helpful. Senegalese are the least friendly, Gambians are horrifically clingy, Bissau-Guineans are very fun but unreliable, and Mauritanians own slaves and sentence you to death for atheism (but other than that are actually alright). 9 minutes ago, Rugster said: If FG is Guinean Francs it's about 23 pence. Correct. To put that in perspective, it's the cost of a coffee or a loaf of bread. So not a huge amount, but stunned that she went out of her way to help me when I hadn't even glanced at her and didn't actually need help.
ICTChris
Is Gambia not a major sex case destination? I know someone who had cause to visit there and found a high number of weird sleazy British tourists.

Full of women in their fifties and sixties with young locals. Anywhere upstream and there's none of that.

velo army
@DiegoDiego can you post some pictures? I'd love to get a picture (so to speak) of where you are.
DiegoDiego
Can only upload 8mb (and don't really want to spam the forum, either) so it's hard to get a representative selection as places are so different. One was where I had a coffee and sachet of water after picking up my Liberian visa this morning here in Conakry, and the other is from Labe.

Those street pics bring back some very fond memories. *also some awful places & people. But in general I’ve never had any problems other than the usual -looking for bribes / payments at airports etc.
