Liverpool City Council Ban FOBTs In Betting Shops

It amazes me that bookies actually make money when most of the people who admit to gambling are nearly always up.

Over a year I'd doing well to break even. Over my life as a gambler I am up, pretty much because of one bet at the start of Euro 2008 which turned a few quid into a few thousand. But for that I'm probably the perfect customer for a bookie. I start cautious, build a balance, get pished and blow it on the online casino. Every f*cking time.

That sounds entirely plausible but having worked in a bookies I've seen my fair share of gambling Walter Mittys.

Not much of a gambler really, normally a couple of quid a week on a coupon or a Lucky 15 but one night I discovered a spare ten quid in my William Hill account and stuck it in roulette took the £10 to £110 (crazy money, I know) then lost it all. Ended up sticking another £30 to try and make my money back then lost that. I know it's only a small amount but I was smart (or lucky) enough to stop then. I really can see how easy it could be to lose a fortune through online gambling.

I tend to put a tenner into my account every week and arse about with it. I try to stick to singles and can generally string 5 or 6 together but given the low stakes it's hardly worth it. Eventually I get impatient and whack the lot on accumulators then bemoan the one team who prove I'm shit at gambling.

Most of the folk I know who bet on the football are generally the same, tenner a week on an accumulator and get the occasional win that covers most of their bets for the year. I do have one friend who, in the last 18 months, has won 3 separate fairly large accumulators, and even then I am not certain he is up as he thinks nothing of putting 100 a time on a 5 team effort in the Brazilian second division, just because.

ETA: fucking LOL at you having a go at people's understanding of probability while claiming you can beat roulette in the long run

The fact you are using the term "beat" indicates your stupidity. As I said, you fail utterly to understand how random chance works.

If I put £10 a day on Red on one spin of roulette in a FOBT for the rest of my life I may come out in profit. I will be more likely to come out down, but that's not what your original claim was.

As I said, you don't understand what you are talking about. On the whole subject really. I did particularly enjoy your Homer Simpson-esque understanding of why people have gambling addictions though. Well done on that.

I was waiting on you asking why alcoholics have vodka for breakfast when cereal with skimmed milk would be much healthier for them.

I would say quite easily I've lost over £20000 playing roulette. Considering I won £23000 last month the figure before that is fucking scary. Purely selfish reasons I want them banned. There was a time when on my walk to work I had to pass 4 ladbrokes and I'd usually go into at least 1.

Honest question matty, would you play online, or do you generally play FOBTS ?

Ie would you play online if the terminals were banned?

I do both anyway. Mostly online now ever since I got fat and lazy.

Unfortunately

In bookies or online? Tis easy to get yourself barred.

Watched that BBC documentary about Corals. Like others say, can't believe they agreed to it. And the manager, while trying to come across as a jovial sort, came across as a bit of a p***k.

Felt sorry for Stuart though. He seemed like a nice chap.

Maybe google the word "variance". You seem to have trouble understanding it. "Random chance" becomes more irrelevant the more you play these games. Out of interest, how often do you think people will come out in profit after 100,000 spins of roulette? I'd guess no more than one in a million like I say.

Not surprising you're trying to end the debate here as you're going absolutely nowhere. Imagine thinking it's quite easily possible to beat roulette over a lifetime of playing it with an edge of more then 2.5% against you

Dear lord Akpo.

I know, silly me for thinking you can't beat a game with the odds firmly stacked against you. Back to playing on your FOBT, m9.

No-one has suggested you can win playing roulette (accept the Ladbrokes shill).

That's exactly what H_B is suggesting, even in the long run over tens of thousands of spins. Can see why people get addicted if they are as deluded as him.

I think we're arguing semantics here, and I'm sure H_B can speak up for himself, but it's possible to be very very lucky and win consistently in roulette.

As an aside, the numbers on a roulette wheel add up to 666. Which tells you all you need to know.

On a slight tangent I've found online Bingo to be highly addictive.

Similar to Bert Raccoon I played it a few times whilst bored and found myself with about £100 in my account, half hour later it was all gone. Did this about 10 times over a couple of weeks before realising I was thick as shit. Stick to small stake singles/doubles and the occasional accy now.

Kept a wee running total of how much I'm up/down for a year and a bit, partly to make sure I'm not losing ridiculous amounts but mostly cause it's interesting to know.
