Mark Burchill "burst" on to the scene at the same time coming of the bench for the last 10 minutes when Celtic were 4-0 up.

The bias that has always existed when it comes to Scotland selection meant Miller had no chance despite clearly being the better player who was starting every week for his club.

Miller made his debut for Hibs in November 1997 and played a total of 7 games (1 start, 6 sub appearances) without scoring in their 1997/98 relegation campaign. He then made 8 appearances (5 starts, 3 as sub) in the 1st Division campaign, scoring a single goal against Stranraer. By the end of the 1998/99 season, he had therefore made 15 appearances for Hibs (6 starts, 9 sub appearances) and had scored just 1 goal.

Burchill made his debut for Celtic in August 1998 and went on to play 23 games that season (5 starts, 18 sub appearances), scoring 8 goals. So despite playing a level higher, and in a team which was much harder to break into , Burchill was playing and scoring far more regularly than Miller.

In 1999/00, both players were in the SPL again. Burchill played 35 times for Celtic (18 starts, 17 sub appearances) scoring 12 goals, and Miller played 38 times for Hibs (29 starts, 9 sub appearances) scoring 13 goals.

At the point where Burchill made his Scotland debut (5th October 1999), Miller had scored a grand total of two goals for Hibs, only one of which was in the SPL, while Burchill had scored 10 times for Celtic, all of them in the SPL.

You can't let facts get in the way of a paranoid rant.

So you are saying that Burchill was superior due to his better scoring record at that stage? Interesting

Nah, what happens here is that bad posters (eg you) turn up on threads posting absolute nonsense and then get defensive and lash out when someone calls it out for what it is.

Must have been killing you not to write some smarm about how clever you think you are there there :D

also

All the posters including you "turn up on threads"

Unless you are omnipresent on all threads.

I think you just have to accept that what you posted was a load of shite.

It wasn't Bing who posted the 'Burchill only got called up because he played for the old firm despite Miller outscoring and outplaying him' thing.

Which is a load of shite, I agree. Memory does kind of synchronise and blur the two of their careers though. When did either of the OF clubs last have an u21 Scottish striker playing and impressing, let alone both having such talents at roughly the same time? Tony Watt did it for a short spell at Celtic. Can't think of another off the top of my head. Boyd was 22 I think when he went to Rangers. Apart from that, nothing much else. So it's not surprising that Burchill and Miller do stick in the mind.

You could cast the further in the past Decade and say at any decent sized club or big league. I think with the move away from two up top for a lot of teams you are going to find less chance of a young striker getting any serious game time at that level with them expected to put a put a serious shift in and score regularly. Unless they are a sensational talent (IE: Moussa and Eddie for us) then they are most likely going to have to drop a few levels and learn their trade on the way up.

ETA - an example of this would be Watt but his attitude has hindered his career, a curse for many Scottish strikers. Currently Aitchison is/was doing well at Forest Green Rovers but I believe he has changed more in to an attacking midfielder now.

He has been nominated for divisional Player of the Season for 2019/20.
I'm not going to pretend to have watched anything of him but hopefully he can continue starting games up a level that's a positive. Always liked him at Dundee Utd.
Glad to see you embracing the Abroad Leagues at last [emoji6]

I think Sporting fucked him tbh.

Crazy, isn't it. Most people thought he'd made a shrewd move going to Sporting where they're big on bringing through youth, but he seemed to join them when the club was collectively having a "heads gone" from president to punter. Seems to have found a good fit at Farense, a club who love him and play him in his best position. Hopefully he continues to do well in the top flight.
