Does this actually work though? Surely most folk wouldn't even listen to what someone chapping their door has to say, let alone change their views if they did listen.

To listen to their usual tired repetitive, ranting drivel? No thanks!

Wouldn’t let em get half way up the driveway! The huge and beautiful Union Flag, flying majestically out on the front terrace is probably a sufficient deterrent! [emoji6]

Has this anti-neoliberal economic model ever been tried out in the real world? Is anyone quite sure what neoliberalism really means? I'd say the Growth Commission  were quite right to assume the current system and market reactions to the economy of a newly independent country when looking for the safest course for the initial years. All can be adapted in time, we have to get there first.

World environment day, action desperately and urgently needed urgently to save the planet, save the human race and all species on earth. Overpopulation, climate change and competition for resources will at least lead to war and famine. And what are we, on one of the most influential countries in the world worrying about? What's the vital issue? Let's go out and chap doors for independence, the issue of whether 0.07% of the world's population should be governed from north or south of an imaginary line on a map!! Or if you're a unionist, what 1% of the world's population's trading relationship with the nearest continent should be!! Keep waving the wee plastic saltires/union jacks, I'm sure our descendants will be so proud of us and how we helped change the world....

Shut up and put the joint down

Allowing corporations to do whatever they want and bombing **** out of whoever has got up the nose of America that morning seem to be the two central tenets.

I can't even begin to comprehend how that is remotely serious or coherent

It's fairly straight forward. It means that you are better off having a small influence in a structure which has the potential to create an equitable economy rather than complete control of a structure which is cemented into an austerity/debt spiral.

Mitchell does a good job of highlighting how under Wilson's plans a lot of fiscal power would reside with Bank Of England style "independent" bodies thus limiting the actions of any elected government.

I'm not sure it can be adapted in time. Once you are locked into Sterling then it's very difficult to get out. If an independent Scotland threatened to implement policies which ago the financial sector doesn't like it would be easy enough for the bond markets and BoE to generate a crisis in favour of the Wilson/RBS faction.

That is after all the point of an independent central bank

It stops politicians printing free money in the run up to elections

That’s because it’s fantasyland nonsense. In real terms, it’s like telling the Wright brothers to stop fooling with silly and unrealistic flying machines, and just keep jumping up into the air, because that’s as high as they’ll get, and maybe a tornado will come by one day.

There is no evidence that Scotland can exert enough political pressure as a minor region of the UK to “improve its situation”. To simply hope and trust that one day it will be able to is ... bizarre.

I don't think there would be a Socialist government in an independent Scotland and wouldn't particularly want there to be one either. I think the idea of Socialists focusing on getting indy over the line and then trying to shape the country to their taste is a sensible approach though. With Scotland's voting system and electorate, there's certainly a much better chance of the left having some influence than can ever be the case in Westminster. Although we probably don't have the same idea for what indy would be all about, I have a lot more respect for indy supporting Socialists than the old Labour types who kiddy on that their No vote is some act of internationalism.

If anything, I could see a small c conservative party emerging after Independence and doing fairly well. Again, not a party I would vote for myself but a genuine choice across the political spectrum would be a pretty healthy development. I'd say the lack of a right of centre that can actually win in Scotland is less to do with everyone up here being lefties and more to do with the Conservative Party being out and out scum.

It was a discussion paper......u know....to errrr prompt discussion. It has done that very well......although some Half-Brick unfortunates have chosen to interpret it as policy.

I see divisive, grievance-mongering separatist Michael Gove has branded the SNP “divisive, grievance-mongering separatists”.

Whether he delivered it the accent he uses when talking to the Jocks or the one he uses when masquerading as an English country squire, I don’t know.
