Spectre

I'd quite like Christopher Nolan to take up the directing gig (with Daniel Craig having one final outing as Bond). Give me the "serious" stuff over a lot of the camp Austin Powers shit Roger Moore served up.

Agree all the way on Nolan and Moore. The "serious" stuff I meant was, for example, suggesting the lame Freudian motivation for Spectre's baddy. That was cringeworthy.

Saw Spectre last night and really enjoyed it. I don't think it was just as good as Skyfall, but not far off it. My only gripe was that it was maybe a bit long.

The opening tracking shot is fantastic and very cleverly done, you almost can't see the joins. The whole opening sequence is up there with the best from any Bond film.

The song manages to suck even more when you hear it over the title sequence.

Just been to see it.

Enjoyed the return of the gun barrel to the beginning (can't remember if they did that in Skyfall), and the film in general was entertaining. I had managed to avoid trailers and the Sam Smith song. I would recommend anyone who has also done this to stick their headphones on and listen to any other Bond theme during the opening credits - even the worst of them at least sounds like a Bond theme. That was just shite. I had also managed to avoid all the Star Wars trailers until today - if you are doing the same, be warned that there is one before Spectre!

As for the film itself:

Plenty of classic Bond stuff in there. Massive mute henchman, ridiculous car chase, ridiculous other vehicle chase, sociopathic villain with dug out secret headquarters, fight on a train - magic.

On the negative side, you could see "I'm your pal Max" being a villain a mile off, even if you hadn't realised there was no way Voldemort and Moriarty could be running the Security Services together. And then the ending. Well, both of them. On the bridge, I half expected Blofeld to shoot one or both of Bond and Madeleine as they walked off into the sunset. And then when he came back for the car, I fully expected them to meet up with Michael Caine in a Mediterranean cafe for a knowing wink.

And where do they go from here? They left the door open for Blofeld, but his relationship with "Bond" can't be the same. And Bond himself is no longer Bond - would a new 007 work in this capacity by just assuming the name as a codename, or are we just going to see a reboot? That's an argument for another day though.

I really enjoyed it - on a scale of Goldfinger to Die Another Day, it's definitely at the upper end, though probably more a For Your Eyes Only-type that is almost a classic rather than a full blown one.

I enjoyed it, nowhere near as good as Casino Royale

Can't help but think if this was the first Bond film you've watched you wouldn't have a clue what was going on at times, oh and what was the point in Dave Bautista character? Anyone could have played random bad guy who really didn't do that much

I'm guessing his character was the big bruiser who just abliterates folk and doesn't talk (thankfully) he's a great choice for the role as he actually looks like a bad b*****d and is an absolute tank, who else would you expect to get the role? Or are you wanting that character written out the film?

What about Oddjob all those years ago?

I didn't dislike it as much as Skyfall but I found it really frustrating. I like so many elements of it but like Skyfall I found the whole to be less than the sum of its parts.

The opening for example - really dramatic, cinematic single take tracking then a load of stupid, unrealistic CGI demolition. The sound annoyed me most of all. Like the CGI, it's as if they don't think the audience has the intelligence to be able to concentrate on a scene for a few seconds without cranking the volume up to defcon 9 or blowing something up.

The Martian has shown that is possible to have an epic action packed movie that's also gentle and full of that subtle touch where the film makers allow scenes to play out without having to crow-bar in bangs and thumps every few seconds.

Spectre is rammed with nods to Bond films of old (in fact I think there might be a tiny nod to every other Bond somewhere) yet the one thing it doesn't honour is to make the most of the long running time to just take a breather. A missed opportunity to deliver something special rather than a straightforward big, dumb blockbuster.

Eta - sorry - paragraphs not working

Saw it tonight. I managed to successfully avoid the trailer and basically all details bar the title of the film and the fact Christopher Waltz was in it.

Really enjoyed it. I wasn't actually expecting much as I've felt there has been a recent trend of bad following good with Bond films (Goldeneye good, followed by Tomorrow Never Dies bad. TWINE followed by the atrocious Die Another Day, followed by the excellent Casino Royal, followed by the underwhelming Quantum, followed by the fantastic Skyfall), but I thought it was excellent. Perhaps not quite as good as Skyfall but more Bondesque.

I felt like there where quite a few subtle references to loads of past films, though I may have been looking too much into it.

Thought it was painfully average as Bond films go. It was good, perfectly enjoyable, but definitely didn't reinvent the wheel. It just went along ticking all the boxes.

The biggest problem with the other three Daniel Craig films is that they where trying to reinvent the wheel. Whilst Skyfall and Casino Royal were definitely good films, Spectre felt more like a Bond film should.
