Years ago, many years ago even, I was working up in the Shetland Isles as a TV repair man. One night I ventured into Lerwick from our neighbouring village to pick up some provisions, etc, for me and the missus. As I drove past my favourite pub I decided a quick pint wouldn't go amiss and in I went. Needless to say I met a few folk I hadn't seen for a while and caught up in a bit of a session. (There's not much you can do when you get caught in a session) Round about midnight I decided to head for home and as luck would have it one of my rear lights had gone out. I was swiftly pulled over by the local gestapo...As they poked and prodded around the van looking for anything else incriminating, one of them asked if I was the guy that repaired/maintained the TV in the police social club. I nodded sheepishly that I was, and was then asked for my address, and on providing that, was told to follow the police car which then more or less escorted me back home. One night there was a knock at the door which his wife answered to find a cop asking if Johnny could bring his tractor to pull out a police car that had driven into a ditch. She told the cop to go back to the car and wait until Johnny got there. A wee while later Johnny rolled up in his tractor, still half-asleep and wearing a coat over his pyjamas. He peered blearily at the relieved cop stood beside his car which was virtually upended in the ditch. "Here", said Johnny, "Are you not the man who pulled me over for drunk driving last year and nearly cost me my licence?" The cop sheepishly admitted that he had. He took his tractor to the pub and the local police were for arresting him again. When they arrived he had parked the tractor in a field at the rear of the pub and drove home pished across his fields and as he wasn't on the public road they could do nothing about it. Said the police didn't even bother. Used to take turns driving a van full of people from the Tolbooth Bar to Celtic Park too. Compared to the central belt we are way behind. I lived in Ellon until 2015. Driving to Aberdeen was an experience. Toll of Birness was worse though.
