So when David Steel retired from public life in disgrace, he kept his membership of The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle?

How very chivalrous of him.

And them.

From the Grauniad, Feb, 2020, on the official report on him having abdicated his responsibility when he recommended Cyril Smith for a knighthood.

Quote

Steel should have confronted Smith and asked “if he was still committing offences against boys” before recommending him for an honour, the report said.

Confronted him, then recommended him for that honour!

I had previously commented on how this might be a force for good.

What if we were to revoke the UK citizenship of the likes of Johnny Adair and his nutter fellow Loyalists, and make them Irish? That would be a good laugh, except for said nutters and the good people of Ireland. Make it happen, Ms Patel.

Can you dispute any of the facts stated in that article?

Absolutely not. Johnson is toast because his own backbenchers are shitting a Labour revival. It won't be the country that throws him out. I still hate the Guardian though.

So what would be your preferred choice of Daily/Sunday Rag?

A labour revival? There's no upcoming election and it's kier starmer in charge of labour. Johnson can stay in place for the next couple of years until it's election time, then out he goes and in comes rishi or whatever greedy incompetent they have lined and give it the "new leader, new government" patter and England will lap it up.

Also, so long as Johnson keeps his nose clean for a while, they'll have another successful campaign in a few years' time even with him as the figurehead. Everyone will have forgotten by then, and the press will do nothing to help remind them so long as they keep getting invites to parties at No. 10.

I think a new Tory leader/PM would certainly get a bounce in the polls.  The problem for the Tory Party is twofold.

Firstly, Johnson won’t last much longer, his lies are finally catching up with him and there’s more to come, IMO he will be gone by the Spring.

Secondly, the country is in a mess.  Covid has largely masked the impact of Brexit as has the delays in full implementation of the various regulations.  It’s a ticking bomb.  The financial support for Covid will limit options for the U.K. government for the foreseeable future and inflation is hitting levels not seen for years and is only going to rise.

Any incoming PM will have to deal with these issues and by the time of the next GE will be drowning in problems.  Any popularity bounce will be gone by then.

Any Labour win would be as disastrous for the UK in the long term because they're devoid of ideas and have signalled their intent to continue down the same path of (managed) decline.

It would be as disastrous for Labour as anything else.

Enough folk have resigned themselves to the fact that this is as good as it gets for the plebs without an inactive "left-wing" party being elected and convincing even more.
