Queen of the South Management Team

Recommended Posts

I hope Barry gets a job in Scottish football soon. Preferably one at a steady club where he's given an entire close season to build a squad, and a realistic set of targets for a season - then we could settle once and for all how good he is.

Received today from an ex player and well connected football guy. Darren Young Believe an approach has been made. Think that would be a good appointment for you guys. A nice guy and talented coach.

Aye but what do you think about Darren Young's personality and coaching ability?

What's Derek Young up to these days? Is he still at Forfar?

Don't know but apparently his brother, Darren, is a lovely guy and a very good coach. Not sure if Queens are interested in him to fill their managerial vacancy though.

Doubt the board are even considering him to be honest. Heard he's a poor coach and not a particularly pleasant guy.

Griffiths left in January, that was it.

Well Benedictus went on loan to Montrose but that was Dundees choice. Most of the squad left in January? Nonsense.

Most other clubs in Scotland aren't left with a starting eleven of that calibre after a bunch of redundancies, you did lose 9 players but the most important one was Colin McMenamin, even then you had Griffiths for a few more months and then Higgins thereafter.

Truthfully, should a side of that calibre been able to accrue 25 more points than Cowdenbeath? Absolutely

Douglas, Irvine, McKeown, Weston, Lockwood, Benedictus, Adams, Harkins, O'Donnell, Riley, Forsyth, Griffiths and Higgins were all very well established championship players who should have been in a team challenging for a title. Using the "Deefiant" stuff was evidently a great way to keep the players motivated and focused, without it the next year Smith would finish 24 points behind the eventual winners, that's really poor.

There's no doubt that it was a fantastic achievement on Barry Smith's part to go on that unbeaten run and keep Dundee up, but it does get extremely tiresome to hear people parroting the line that Dundee were struggling to put a team on the pitch. As you say, they didn't make a single first team regular redundant when they entered administration and still had a squad which should have been accruing a points total that would have had them challenging for a title had it not been for the deduction. It's to Smith's credit that they did so and his man-management was clearly excellent that season too, but the suggestion that he did it with a group of youth players and trialists is just a blatant lie.

There was no point in their time in this division - administration included - where Dundee didn't have one of the top two wage bills in the league.
