Celtic are closing in on a deal for Patrick Roberts.

Talks are thought to be at an advanced stage with Manchester City with the young striker who proved such a hit during the Bhoys’ record-breaking unbeaten season.

But the sticking point is the price, with Celtic prepared to pay £5m for the England U20 starlet.

City paid £12m to land the 20 year old from Fulham in 2015, and after an impressive season at Celtic Park, boss Pep Guaridola is still a fan… and so would hope to recoup much of that fee.

City though, are keen to offload as many as 12 players this summer, and if Celtic can get closer to the money City paid two years ago, then they will complete a deal.

And that would be great news for the club’s fans who took to the young English forward during the treble season.

Boss Brendan Rodgers is determined to push through an agreement, and is hoping to wrap up the transfer using money Celtic will receive from a sell on clause inserted when they sold Virgil van Dijk to Southampton.

The defender is thought to be on the verge of a move to City for around £60m, and that would see the Hoops bank up to £10m for the defender... which is likely to be the price the Manchester club will ask for their striker.

10m sounds reasonable for a guy they paid 12m for and fits well into Celtics current team.

I read somewhere that city paid about £5 or £6m for him, the £12m was a total figure with add ons for appearances, which he's never gonna achieve tbf. So if he's willing to come back to Glasgow it might not cost as much as £10m, a big if right enough.

Getting Roberts in permanently would be a tremendous signing for Celtic. He is a fantastic option to have coming in off the right and with him and Sinclair either side of the park it gives them a very good balance going forward, irrespective of who plays through the middle.

Has Armstrong signed a new contract yet? Would have expected that to be the first bit of business they concluded, with a right back and Roberts(or his replacement) being the only real areas to strengthen as it stands. Other than that you expect it to be a case of shifting on squad players and only replacing the better players who are sold(Dembele or Sviatchenko/Simunovic if one leaves).

I'm guessing he (Armstrong) wants to wait until after the England game because if he plays well he'll have more options.

Big challenge will be if Roberts has ambition to play for England.

If he moves up here that's unlikely. He is young though so might not be top of his agenda just now.
