Double Winning St Johnstone FC Thread

Am I right in saying Hearts have been relegated more times than St Johnstone this millennium?

They've been relegated from the top league 5 times since reconstruction in 1975. Saints have been relegated 4 times from that league over the same period.

Missing the football/day out today, lockdown is shite but wholly needed, on the drink in a big way, stay safe, stay home, unless you're bringing beers and the European exploits dvd, you will then be ushered in and disinfected as needed*.

* Random would be acid dipped.

Stumbled across a video of our goals from 2019-20. Well done to Leroi Jackson, whoever he may be, that put it together. Appears to be missing the goals from the day we battered Hearts 3-3.

Top goal possibly Booth's in the cup v Morton.

Best of the league goals for me would be from:-

Spoony second at home to Accies

 Hendry's winner the same game

MOH at Easter Road

Kennedy equaliser at home to Aberdeen

McCann's cool finish at Pittodrie

Hendry's winner in the last game v Livi.

Special mention to JK's late equaliser at EasterRoad for the scenes.

I had kind of blanked out going to the football and not dwelt on it, but watching that video of our squad of talented young players now with a steady defence behind them, and realising it could be next year before we get to see a match in person again, is pretty shite.

Missing a few others too: Killie at home and Hearts away at first glance.

A recent thread in the championship forum got me thinking about all the different grounds we've played major cup semi finals at.  I think it's 7.  With the cup final anniversary coverage this coming Sunday, in the context of how great a day that was, it's important to remember just how much Saints fans suffered in semi-finals in the years prior (and since)..  see the next post.

The other thing that strikes you, is since the early 1960's, we've been in 18 national major semi-finals. That's 18 in about 59 years. Almost one every three seasons.  Prior to that we'd been in one major cup semi final in the first 76 years of our history.

Theres no real point to this, but I would think that, outwith Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen and Dundee United, 18 semi-finals during that period must be quite high compared to the vast majority of other clubs.

It does make you wonder what the f**k we were playing at during those first 76 years!

First three were great performances without much luck, especially Hibs. Next three were different levels of shite. I know some people say we played ok in the first semi-final of the Aberdeen double header, but we got pumped 4-0, it was shite. Motherwell was the worst of the lot clearly, an abject performance that is up there with Minsk as my worst day at the football.

Last performance against Hibs was very poor, although we were cheated.

Agree Ali, I never got the cry at the time against Aberdeen that we actually played okay. I remember them sitting in and battering us on the break. The Hibs one in 2016 was bad luck in the timing. Most LCs before and since were done before Christmas, but that year the semi was in January. We'd been on fire in Oct-Nov with MOH being one of the standout attacking players in the league. Obviously he'd had his head turned in January and we were shite that day as you say.

Missed the Motherwell one as I was working away. Not too disappointed about that as it looks horrendous watching the highlights.

Our best player in the late 1980's was Stevie Maskrey. A few weeks before the SC semi final v Rangers, fat Dundee haddie Bobby Glennie nailed Zorro in a midweek match at Starks Park so he missed the first semi final tie. It was a stuffy competitive match with few chances either way, but if Zorro had been playing we'd have had a great chance to win that match, as Rangers were dreadful that day.

Then there the penalty shoot out loss after going ahead v rangers in extra time.  Cheated against United at East End Park in 1991.  Losing in extra time at Tynecastle to Hibs in 2007.  So many near misses, thank f**k we did eventually win one!

I think we played alright against Aberdeen at Tynecastle tbh.

I think it's fine to say Saints played well but Aberdeen were just incredible. A properly top drawer display of counter attacking football, and utterly clinical at the same time. Felt like Saints had the ball, playing it about nicely, then BANG! Aberdeen have gone down the park and scored.

I was raging at the time and calling everyone shite though, obvs.

The Hibs game at Tynecastle still annoys me. Blatant dive for the penalty, and I'm still convinced Mannus had a nightmare for the winner. Touched @Kyles hand though.

I’ve been to the last 8 (still raging at my old man for not taking me to Easter Road in 98 since it was a school night), so Aberdeen was seventh time lucky.

None of that matters as that one victory makes all of the heartbreak worthwhile.

What a glorious club we support.

How’d we play in that first semi final against Rangers@tree house tam? Bit unlucky?

89 was my first semi in a football sense ali you cheeky c**t. My first semi in a sexual situation was roughly around 100m from the east stand, 86ish, she was a bit unlucky, aye.

Lots of hate for us from Hearts and Rangers fans on twitter just now. Threats of boycotting Mcdiarmid etc.

Hearts don’t need to worry about that to be honest.

St Johnstone fans come out of that scenario as the only winners, I’d say.
