this was something we'd never seen before in a Grand Theft Auto game. Every level feels different, everything is varied and, most of all, great fun. The music, the RPG elements, the size of the task involved to get a 100 per cent completion - tremendous.
It still holds up now. It's a bit glitchy, the enemy AI is wobbly in parts and it pops up like heck but who cares when everything else is so good?

That's what makes it the best GTA for me, it was so different. I loved GTA III and Vice City but going back to them they didn't age well and weren't as much fun, San Andreas is.

My number one. I'm not sure how many times I've completed it but I'm definitely in double figures - I will never ever get bored of this game. The over the top, nonsensical fun is everything a GTA game should be about. Even after doing it this many times going for 100% still presents enough of a challenge to keep it interesting. While you can rate other games more highly in terms of technical achievements etc, there's no other game that's come close to giving me as much enjoyment as San Andreas.

So many iconic missions to remember but highlights for me include Doberman which kicks off the Gang Wars the first time round, the casino missions scaring Johnny Sindacco and parachuting onto the dam (I loved the opportunity to use stealth), all the Mike Toreno missions (Vertical Bird especially), evading the Russians with Big Smoke riding the bike through flood control (Terminator 2 moment included), Black Project where you take the jetpack, the final run of missions of the game from returning to Los Santos by parachuting into the mansion to the absolutely brilliant final mission.

Mike Toreno, Wu Zi Mu, Smoke, Ryder, Tenpenny, The Truth, the returns of Kent Paul & Ken Rosenberg - incredible cast of characters.

Wrong Side of The Tracks is a piece of piss by the way, I never understood why people found it difficult - stay at the other side of the track to give Smoke enough of an angle to shoot and they'll all be dead before the train even reaches the tunnel. If you stay right alongside the train, you're giving him no chance of shooting them because there's no angle for it.

I've just got a PS4 and have several games to play through, while there are still games from last-gen I need to catch up on, but this has really made me want to go back for yet another shot of San Andreas.

One of my favourites is the one after you have the big shoot up with big smoke in the centre then ride a motorbike through the viaduct shooting folk behind you.... As big smoke pulled out the first time I played it 'Welcome to the Jungle' started blaring

Fucking ace.

Obviously a very good, in fact great game but I found the gang warfare bit quite tedious when you had to stop what you were doing and defend your turf, a sort of forerunner to IV's constant phone calls, and the badlands missions when you fucked one up and and had to travel miles back to the start point were annoying too.

Fairly clear what the top 3 will be now but don't know what order.

The Last of Us and Skyrim will take up 2 of the the top 3. I thought the Witcher 3 might've been there, but it may just be too new to do so. Then again, it probably would've been here by now.

Witcher 3 will now definitely be top 3. There's been too many folk with it in their top 10 for it not to be.

I see Rock Star Ate My Hamster was mentioned. Did anyone ever make it into a second year on that game?. I tried my best with stars like Stiff Pilchards but as an 11 year old was too fond of going for publicity stunts because you got to see tits on the newspaper. Anyway Championship Manager 01/02 has to be the best game. You could play it while getting high and delude yourself into thinking you are a football genius. The later versions demand too much effort.

I played Rock Star Ate My Hamster on a C64 emulator a few months back, as it was on an emulator you could cheat by saving before you did the publicity in case any of your guys died, you could also play it at triple speed. Even with that, I only managed to get a number 1 single but couldn't top the album chart, even the guy who made the same said it was bloody difficult. I think it stopped at the end of the year regardless of what you did.

If I remember correctly it just means that no one will attempt to take over your turf.

Always annoyed me that there was a very small area in the 3rd island that was gang territory.

Hang around long enough and they would eventually spawn and you could take it, but it took a lot of waiting about.

Unfortunately it doesn't work on later versions of the game such as the Xbox release, download from the PS store, etc, but did anyone do the glitch on the original PS2 version that created gang territories on the entire map? You could fly off the edge of the map at a certain angle then when you respawned after eventually dying there'd be territories everywhere. Great fun if you enjoyed the gang wars and wanted to prolong them, although it inevitably threw up a few that you couldn't get at.

Rock Star Ate My Hamster - I did the sad-act thing years ago, and save-stated every week, just to see if I could finish it. You need four platinum records by the end of the year to win. Did everything as well as it was possible to, and still ended up a bawhair away from platinum record #4. I reckon you could have played that game every day for the past thirty years and still not have completed it.

Bet it's one of those games that finishes with a black screen saying 'CONGRATULATIONS!' too. Arseholes.

reminds me of jurassic park on the SNES, no save feature whatsoever, password etc, nothing, you had to play the game through in one run which was a b*****d to complete as finding the fucking raptor eggs was brutal, when you eventually escaped from the island all you got was this
