Montrose Vs Clyde - Squeeky Bum Time

Recommended Posts

So it all comes down to this!

Fully expect Berwick to win vs Edinburgh so we need to match or better cowden's result. Unfortunately our away form is gash and Montrose has been the venue for some terrible performances in the past, including possibly the worst ever result in the clubs history (let's hope Saturday doesn't steal that title).

An interesting subplot is that Montrose and Elgin are also in a direct shoot out for the last play off place. So Montrose can afford to drop points as long as Elgin also do so.

To keep things simple we just have to go all out for the win, but who would back us given saturdays performance and aforementioned away form.

No idea how we will line up to minimise the terrible options we have in central midfield and central defence or no proper left back. McKenzie looked like he could be worth drafting in, one of the better performers on Saturday.

Fingers crossed we can scrape over the line at 4.45pm in 9th place. Mon the Clyde!

I agree we need to go all out for a win.

We only need a draw, but for this team to try to play for a draw would be fatal.

Our only hope is to score goals, which we know we can do, because we are very unlikely to keep a clean sheet.

On paper we have the toughest game - Edinburgh have nothing to play for and Elgin haven't won in the last ten,

I would seriously start with Goodwillie and Peaso up front with Gormley in behind them. Get at them from the word go.

The major concern is if Montrose do get in front, say 2-0 at half time, then this gives Elgin no chance of a playoff and plays into Cowdenbeath's hands.

Which is why we need to go for goals, right from the start.

Say Cowdenbeath win, we lose two-nil, Berwick lose two-one...

We finish exactly level with Berwick (Cowden would be safe). What happens then? Would we have to have a pre-playoff playoff? Or would it go on head-to-head? If it does to head-to-head we are exactly level on points and goals but would edge it if they counted away goals.

sfl rules state both clubs relegated with East Kilbride and East Stirling promoted

Just Googled my own question... head-to-head does count if everything else is level but away goals don't count. So we would have to have a one-off Friendship Derby at a neutral ground to decide who avoids the playoff against Buckie/EK.

It does. If we finish level on goal difference AND goals scored it goes to a playoff if 9th/10th place is to be decided.

Playoff will happen if:

Cowdenbeath win
We lose
Berwick lose
We lose by exactly one more goal than Berwick lose
Berwick score exactly one more goal than we score.

So we lose 2-0, they lose 2-1, we lose 3-1, they lose 3-2, etc.

Presumably such a playoff would have to take place on the Tuesday or Wednesday - not ideal preparation for the loser before facing Buckie or East Kilbride. Imagine you'd be talking somewhere like Meadowbank or Almondvale?

I recall a few years ago a playoff to avoid the relegation playoff in what was then the SFL First Division almost occurred between Morton and Clyde, IIRC. It would've been a 2-legged playoff under SFL rules.

EDIT: Interestingly there has not been any tie-break playoff in the Scottish League since 1914-15. On that occasion, when only points were considered - Cowdenbeath, Leith Athletic and St Bernards tied for the tier 2 title. Playoffs were arranged:

Saturday 10th April 1915 at Dunfermline ... Cowdenbeath 2-1 Leith Athletic
Saturday 17th April 1915 at Easter Road ... Leith Athletic 2-1 St Bernards
Saturday 24th April 1915 at Easter Road ... St Bernards 1-3 Cowdenbeath

Cowdenbeath 4pts, Leith Athletic 2pts, St Bernards 0pts

Irrespective of Saturday's results and the play-off resuts, you'll still have a "senior" team to support next season.
