A number of years ago I stood behind George Fleming in a queue at the servery in The Horn on the Carse of Gowrie. I was astonished to see that he wasn't wearing white shoes.

I was guessing the opposition was either Brazil or Sweden which ties in with the 1977 tour.

Was KD captain that day? Followed by Alan Rough, George Burley and Frank McGarvey who was making his debut after signing for Liverpool. I like how close the crowd is at the old tunnel entrance at Hampden. Our players look slightly apprehensive of the game ahead. Two absolute classic strips on display. Was at this game with a couple of school friends. Remember us gawking open mouthed at the keepie-up skills of a 16 year old Diego Maradona prior to kick off.

Assuming I'm recognising all the players correctly that line up matches the one against Brazil at the Maracana in June 1977. I remember both Scotland and England toured South America that summer in preparation for the Argentina 1978 World Cup - it didn't help either of them.

Have seen the grainy footage on YouTube? I believe Arthur Graham swapped jerseys with Maradona. Be interesting to know opinions of Aberdeen fans @kingjoey of Arthur Graham, Ian Scanlon and Peter Weir. They were so fortunate to have three excellent left wingers back in the day. I would choose Peter Weir as my favourite. As a Saints fan I was also open mouthed that Iain Munro and Frank McGarvey both started the game for Scotland. Iain Munro incredibly won 7 caps while at St Mirren. Peter Weir won 4 of his 6 caps at Saints. Given Peter Weir’s success at Aberdeen it’s surprising he only received another two caps. McGarvey had just signed for Liverpool but in my head he was still a Saint that day. Edited March 16, 2023 by Molotov

I seem to remember the Scotland games were broadcast live. What let Scotland down in many ways down the years was the lack of preparation for off field facilities and the “blazers” treating it as a jolly for themselves rather than focus on the players. Given our experience in ‘78 Argentina you would have thought that the ‘86 Mexico trip would have been planned much better. The SFA officialdom held the team back for major tournaments imho. If we look back at some of the players we had down the years it was disgraceful that we never achieved better results on the global stage.
Ranaldo Bairn
The lack of preparation and, frankly, common sense from the blazerati in 1954 was sector-leading in its ineptness.

The Argentina games stick in my mind as they were shown in black and white and we'd just got out a new colour TV. Also I'm pretty sure both Scotland and England had a player sent off against Argentina.

He had just come into the team before my first Cup Final in 1970 and he will always be special in my eyes. Ian Scanlan was ok, but no more than that, whereas Peter Weir was a magnificent player. The best of the three for me and his unforgettable performance against Ipswich at Pittodrie was, well, unforgettable.
