For Ayr to progress to the next level, they need to appoint a proper coach with philosophy and style of play drilled into the players.

Bullen is quite a good manager, good with people and generally well liked and respected but is tactically limited.  He’s clearly unable to solidify a style of play when the going gets tough that doesn’t extend beyond raw hard work and relying on individual brilliance/luck.

If Bullen was to embrace the ‘managers’ role and appoint a coach like Alex Ferguson did with Carlos Queiriz to do the work on the pitch tactically and drill a style of play into squad it would balance out his tactical deficiencies.

THIS. If anyone from Ayr is reading pie and bovril (we know you are) this ^ is the post you need to read.

There is no doubt he needs a experience coach/assistant it's easy to forget that just because he's in his 50s this is his first gig as a manager if he was 37 at the end of his playing career no way would he not have an assistant.

Does the managers role exist at Ayr? I thought Bullen was employed as a coach and some of the other duties split amongst the backroom staff

It was made clear last season that he'd tried to pull in a number of assistants but for a variety of reasons we couldn't get them, so we were definitely looking for someone.

Going off on a a tangent, I've had to access from a different source tonight (while half jaked) and it chucked me back to 2018, it really is quite amusing reading some of the posts (and most of us are involved) where we wanted Forrest punted, Doc punted etc, etc.. I'm not getting at anyone because virtually all of us can look back and have a laugh at ourselves, so it just goes to show we all just call it as we see it at the time but there's a reason we all do real work for a living and aren't turning up at some European footballing giant's football ground for training tomorrow.......

Bullen is a head coach by all accounts, and is assisted by Davie White, who is the academy director.  Unsure of his coaching qualifications but as far as the input goes goes it’s more corner boy carry on genuine tactical coaching. Could argue he mirrors Bullen rather than contrasts him.

Traditionally a head coach reports to the DOF and isn’t really responsible for recruiting players etc with primary task coaching the players provided to him

Would second this. Get the feeling he would be a very good assistant manager and believe he carried this role out successfully at SWed whilst constantly overlooked for the main managers role. Perhaps quite telling if you’re overlooked 2-3 times for the main gig but kept around for other jobs within the club.

David White is Head of Academy, rather than a director. He has a UEFA A Licence.

Personally never real bought the idea that he needs an experienced assistant. A dedicated full time assistant manager for the first team, yes.

However enough dinosaurs exist in Scottish football that experience doesn't guarantee anything, the issue is finding someone that can balance out Bullen's weaknesses but they could have retired from playing yesterday for all I care.

He managed the under 23 side for a number of years, with a couple of caretaker stints with the first team. He's still incredibly popular down here.

Of course he doesn’t….he’s 52!

If he had an assistant and that assistant offered him advice, there is no guarantee he’d take it, so it would be an expensive waste of time considering that he says he doesn’t really need one.

he’s been in the job too long to need a mentor, maybe that’s whet he meant when he said he was old. His biggest failing is making changes mid game, especially in big games. I’m not certain that an assistant would fix that 100%
