Mathie said that players don’t see Ayr as their second or even third choice club. If they are so out our range, why approach them in the first place?

That is not what he said, he said when he came in at first that was the case and he believes that has improved.

Raith have new owners who wanted to invest, they signed a lot of good Championship players, they didn’t go out and sign players that were being chased by premier league clubs.
they also sold more season tickets than Ayr despite having a pretty dull season last year. I’m not sure how that equates to the impending doom you are predicting.

The impending doom comes from the money wash that’s taking place over there it’s only a question off time .

For the record I’d have kept Mullin and would have loved us to sign one or two that they and Dundee United got . However we ain’t going there at this point . That day may come but it’s not today .

Murphy agent approached us this summer . It is fair to say however that United and Rovers are paying money that we won’t/can’t at this point .

The money wash?

Talk about hugely exaggerating, they’ve signed well based on their weaknesses. Absolutely nothing to suggest what you are saying.

This was always going to be a diversion exercise to take some heat off the manager and squad for a wee while at least. No new ideas have come out of it( that were talked about on camera anyway), and all the answers were totally predictable.  Mr Mathie is never going to slate the manager or squad publicly,  but must have had his own opinions tested since last Christmas. Bottom line is carry on as usual and have faith in the process, but changes will happen if improvements don't come. Hopefully with Murphy back we can have a bit more of a go at teams, we can't be as shit as we have looked in the last few weeks.

I’m not asking Smith to splash money on the squad, I want the budget to be spend more wisely.

We have a pretty bloated squad right now that is low in quality. We probably have half a dozen players we could ship out and not miss. Players that should either never have been signed or never offered a new deal.

If you look at the squad in 2017/18 there was almost no fat on it at all, we needed a new left back when we got promoted and that was about it.

This summer, after our highest league placing in years, we had to sign 12 players. There is obviously something wrong.

FWIW we were reported to be in for Stanger so that’s one Ayr beat us to.

Who else from our summer signings would Ayr have been in for? Byrne, Mullin, Hamilton and maybe Smith?

Byrne is from Kennoway so was always likely to pick an east coast team, Smith is also from Cowdenbeath and worked with Murray previously.

So would suggest Mullin and Hamilton are the only 2 we’ve actually ‘outbid’ you for. Mullin, I believe Barrowman was in touch with him very early with the offer of a 3 year deal, length of deal rather than money sealed it and it was agreed by April. I would imagine we must have had to offer a very good deal for Hamilton though and Ayr not having sold Akinyemi at that point probably counted against them being able to compete for that one.

To be fair, you're acting on the assumption that Mathie isn't talking out his arse here.  This is all a distraction tactic from the shit show that is on the field, which he is the mastermind behind.  We no doubt have had interest in some to go along with the half hearted bid for Brian Graham when they originally began panicking.

Yeah - some people just don’t want to admit that our recruitment has been appalling since January, with a complete lack of forward planning and thought put into it.

Instead of comparing ourselves to Raith and looking at what they have done well such as identifying weaknesses in their sides and looking for good championship    players to fit their style - some people just decide Raith are splashing the cash to try and justify our failed approach in some way.

On the other hand, we have signed  mountains of dross and are having to pay them off.

So we now know striker wise we tried to sign Paton, Graham, McKay and Hamilton  - I’m not entirely sure on the style of Paton but the rest at least have the ability to act as a focal point in some way. We then went out and signed someone that can’t do that…

Last season we finished second and many would have thought the club were going places. You would have thought players would be keen to come along. Not sure what has went wrong but if we can’t manage it after last season then not sure what else needs changed

Think it was quite clear from within this wasn’t going to be the case. Many players knew it was fluke coming 2nd and wanted to leave while their stock was inflated and rightly so. Mathie even confirmed a lot of people had decided before end of season.

That, and the budget not being competitive with other clubs means players will always go to who pays the most and that’s just a fact. The chairman has chosen to invest in infrastructure rather than the playing staff - and while that’s his right to and long term it will pay off, in the short term he will just have to settle for championship survival.

Not quite right, we finished the season with Jordan Heart in goal, David Ferguson and Craig Reid as right back and Paddy Boyle as left back. They were freed apart from Hart who chose not to stay. All 3 moved down the way. The players brought in to Replace them were Liam Smith (who left for Dundee United) Daniel Harvey (who left for MK Dons and made us £60k) and Ross Dohan. We also brought in Andy Murdoch and at Christmas, Aaron Muirhead. Thats not bad recruitment. 3 regular starters out, 3 upgrades in plus Andy Murdoch.

Didn’t Harvie leave under freedom of contract?

We got a development fee for him, he signed a new deal a few weeks before he left

If he’d signed a new deal it would have been a transfer fee, Shirley.

Development fee implies we offered him a contract which he choose not to accept.
