Miguel Sanchez
Week 36 update Right, enough Bishop Briggs baiting. This week's sole death is Robert Mugabe. Obituary: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/sep/06/robert-mugabe-obituary Quite the read, I'm sure you'll agree. On Friday when his death was announced I got to see in real-time the problem with today's news and its cowering fear in the face of presenting any actual facts. I was watching BBC Breakfast on Friday morning before work. At about five past six the news was announced that Mugabe had died. Now, obviously sudden breaking news like this is hard on live news channels in terms of the on-screen content. It's why you usually get a lot of repetition whenever there's something like a terrorist incident for example, as the same eight seconds of footage is repeated for two hours along with some literal scrambling for relevance by whoever is presenting at the time. On Friday morning, and in a programme with a relatively fixed schedule, I got to see twenty minutes or so of them trying to shoehorn this in. A tweet was read out from someone who described Mugabe in vaguely diplomatic and neutral terms, that he was an architect of a country and it wouldn't be there without him. The replies to this tweet were, apparently, quite scathing. The bearded gonk presenting the programme approached this with as much tact as he could attempt in a display of bothsidesism that Donald Trump would raise an eyebrow at. "Public opinion.... split... on... him there... as you can see...." By the time midday came, the reporting was much more reflective of the whole dictator and mass killings of farmers and hyper-inflation thing you see in the obituary there. I'm 27 years old. Things like the Berlin Wall, Yugoslavia and an apartheid South Africa were either gone or on the way out when I was born, so whenever historical subjects like this come up there's a sort of detachment from them for me. I can't really relate to them properly, my opinions largely being influenced by a latter-day understanding of them rather than a contemporaneous one. As a result, whenever I've heard the name Robert Mugabe in my life my first thought has been: bad. It's quite simple stuff, really. And here you have the state broadcaster in 2019, unwilling to call Robert Mugabe bad in case some zoomer emails them telling them they're a disgrace to democracy or something. What a time we're living in. Before I get to the points I want to share two things he gave the world: A sense of style, and some hilarious bank notes. I mean, the jokes write themselves here. I'm almost interested in learning about economics to understand how something like this happens. If you like the design and layout of this Monopoly money though you might also enjoy his taste in suits: I suppose if you rig a country so that you and only you can be in charge for 40 years, you start thinking you can pull off anything.
