Oops, my mistake. Well pointed out - I've edited the pic. Anyway I think it's basically just a lazy way of looking at things to just say he isn't trusted in the "big games" against the "big teams". That's my overall point.

I'm not an expert on Brighton, but your chart would suggest that he's simply being rested/rotated out of the starting 11 occasionally, except perhaps against Liverpool and Man City where it could be a tactical decision to drop him for the reasons suggested upthread; he's less of an asset when the team don't have the ball so much, basically.

I think every game is taken on its own merits. BG has a specialist role and I wouldn't describe him as an all round midfielder. I think it's a toolbox. He gets used for some jobs and not for others. Games that suit him

Our other midfielders are like Multi-tools. McGregor, McGinn, McTominay, Ferguson and even Christie now have played in different midfield roles over the years and I think you probably need that flexibility to always play and that's before taking into account the player availability/injuries or minutes played or whatever else.

Gilmour has very similar characteristics to Pascal Gross who seems to be a favourite of the manager. They do play together in the double pivot but more often than not if he is rotating in another player Gross keeps his place.

From what I've seen Gilmour has done well and I expect him to get a decent amount of game time, especially if they have to move Gross further forward or to full back due to injuries. I also expect him to keep improving over the course of the season.

Definitely think he's similar to Gross and this is probably the biggest factor. Their latest young gem that they'll probably sell to Chelsea for £200m is a 19 year old Cameroonian Baleba who fits the profile of Caicedo more, certainly has more about him off the ball.

In games where you have lots of the ball you're more likely to see Gilmour and Gross. For games where you need more physicality and off the ball running, it will tend to be Baleba and one other. At the moment the experienced Gross tends to get the nod in those tougher games, but hopefully we see a transition from Gross to Gilmour over the next season or 2

This probably doesn't apply much to Brighton because they're typically a possession team and at worst are usually getting 50% share, but for Scotland it could be the case where you play Gilmour even if you know you won't win the possession battle (e.g France, England), but you just want to try and get 10- 15% more of the ball or just try to hold on it a little longer in some games rather than just firing it straight back.

There's more than enough reasons why you might select or not select him. That's before you even begin speaking about just rotation because he's had a lot of minutes or if he's been playing through a niggle or anything else like that.

TA gonks doing their job well today

(  Super John motm for Villa apparently )

fingers crossed for the internationals

Go on the Villa forum. The consensus was that it was possibly the greatest game he has played for them. He was apparently everywhere, winning the ball back and giving their defence nightmares.

We might have half our defenders missing, no goalkeeper, and misfiring strikers, but the 4/5/6 key midfielders have been terrific all season, and had a great few weeks since the last camp.

We’d be in a much worse position if McTominay/McGinn etc we’re struggling. Their form, alongside Gilmour, McGregor, Christie, and Ferguson still gives me confidence of good results and performances this week.

TA gonks not quite on it tonight !

tut , tut

I watched about half an hour of their match. He was only okay. He misplaced a couple of passes and Brighton were counterattacking at pace (not his strong suit). It's almost as if the ratings are actually reflective of what people are watching.

Gilmour can be a bit hit and miss at times. We've seen that with Scotland. He's still a young player and so that's to be expected.

He's been getting a high percentage of minutes available at Brighton across domestic and European competition (96%) since the international break. That might be because of injury issues at Brighton or it might be because he is performing well, I don't know enough about Brighton to say.

It is a bit of both - Dahoud has been suspended and along with injuries in the full back areas it has meant Gross has spent time at full back too. At the same time though, there are other players that can play at full back and Baleba has also been on the bench until the last couple of games. I think Dahoud is back this weekend so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Gilmour get rested.

De Zerbi obviously likes to rotate so it can be hard to completely define it but Gilmour hasn’t been rotated out at all recently. I have only watched the last two games but Gilmour was very good.
