Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Aye I think so too. Not sure why it's all of a sudden become news.

"Virus does thing that viruses have always done."
Akin to Declan McManus doing Declan McManus thingz on Saturday up at Dens Park. You love to see it.

Pedantry alert: It was actually both. "Jags" for his abuse of the ministerial car provision, and, later, "jabs" for punching a local who had a pop at him while out campaigning in Wales.

As noted, mind, both versions work equally well.

ETA: OK, beaten to it, but I thought I'd better do a wee bit of work today..

That's the one I remember

You'd think that some high head ones somewhere would have been tasked with creating a framework and system for efficient vaccine dispensing over the last 9 months, it beggars belief how badly prepared we've been at all stages of this shitshow.

Unfortunately none of the clowns In positions of power need to sweat for an instant about their jobs, cash or food, it's high time we all voted for people that are capable and motivated to change things for the better and kick the shit out into the real world.

I saw Matt Hancock being interviewed recently and have tailored my expectations accordingly.

I wouldn't hire him to hold the Golf Sale sign.

It's to do with the curve of the earth.  It's a shorter route going over Scotland.  You regularly get flights from Europe flying over Inverness on their way to the West Coast of the US and A.

I always find it partly-depressing flying over Scotland en-route to the States knowing that's where you were five hours or so ago when you checked in for your trip's first leg down to Heathrow / Schiphol.   "Oh look, the Cairngorms, where we could have been four f***ing hours ago had we driven there rather than the airport".

Drinking up time in the nightclubs on the first night back is going to be mental.  Sexually frustrated folk who have been holding out for something better all night eventually thinking "ach, you'll do" prior to a scene resembling Tommy & Liz in Trainspotting.

He's still building the thread as I posted

Addition referencing everyone's favourite covid 19 p&b thread topic. Kids+schools

Looking more and more like Scot gov figures were on the button for schools, while the deviation down south was due to this new strain. As that works its way up here we might well have no choice but to shut the schools. Crucially, f**k knows what I'll do with MAH TWO WEANS in that case. Nintendo switches will be getting rattled I predict. Kind of rely on the school for childcare.

Only pre print, and not peer reviewed yet... but here is the paper on the new strain. Reckons 56% more transmissible.

https://cmmid.github.io/topics/covid19/uk-novel-variant.html

Some lighthearted conclusions include a higher death toll in 2021 than in 2020 with only maximum restrictions including total closure of all education establishments able to give some degree of confidence of keeping R below 1. This is not due to increased susceptibility in kids (assumed to be 50% of transmission rates as adults in the model) which shows a poor fit to their chosen model, but simply because the increased infectiousness across all age groups makes it far harder to get a grip on, further it notes:

Quote

An accelerated uptake of 2 million people vaccinated per week is predicted to have a much more substantial impact. The most stringent intervention scenario with Tier 4 England-wide and schools closed during January, and 2 million individuals vaccinated per week, is the only scenario we considered which reduces peak ICU burden below the levels seen during the first wave

Great.
