He's going to say that his child has a health condition, my money's on autism or another ASD, which means he requires specialised childcare. That's why the local relative wouldn't have worked and he had to go somewhere where they knew how to give that childcare.

Except they can't make their minds up on whether or not they actually used childcare

No, but he's going to say that the likelihood was that he and his wife were going to both get ill and if so there was a strong possibility they would require childcare.

If - and it's a big if - his child does have autism, then I do have a (very, very slight) degree of sympathy for him, given my own circumstances.

That being said, there will be a large amount of parents of autistic children around the country who have gotten ill and soldiered on with no external childcare as that's what they believed they should be doing.

My own kids haven't seen any of their friends / family for nine weeks. Granted my wife and I haven't been ill.

I don't understand the differentiation people are making between making sure childcare was available if needed and then actually using it.  If the pair of them were down with CV-19, it would be a bit late to go looking for childcare then.

Not defending Cummings - he's an entitled c**t and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near government - but the 'did't use it after all' argument is unsound.

If his child is autistic and the family are there to administer the special care needs and with him and his wife having jobs in the city, do they get up extra early to drop the kid of at nan's daily?

There's a greater amount of suitable childcare in London for autistic kids than there is in Durham.

Yep. I know if there was a high likelihood that both me and my wife were going to be ill, the last thing we'd be wanting to do is to wait until we were both ill and then try to arrange some childcare.

I reckon he won't actually say that though. The bots have put it out on the twitter so all he has to do is drop a heavy hint or two that he may have had particular requirements for the kid. That way he won't actually be lying.

Well, that depends very much on the child.

Yeah, that's a strong possibility. He could drop it as something like 'our family's own circumstances'.

Autism can have very specific terms for certain children.

Perhaps they can both manage when they are both well. Perhaps they take turns with childcare. It's not outwith the realms of possibility that they don't need childcare when they are both fit and well, even if they are both working. Perhaps the child goes to an existing childcare provider that is not currently open.
