He literally won a Republican primary from outside the party. The Republicans who were previously lurched even further into the right-wing nuttersphere by the Tea Party movement and birtherism. The best possible outcome of this is that they will split into two equally hostile factions, like Teddy Roosevelt's similar politics-by-ego experiment at the start of the twentieth century.
