Billy Connolly used to do a routine about Husbands Bosworth - he thought it sounded like a line from a folk song.

"How much are my husband's baws worth?"

In 1984 some newspaper had an article "Why is there an Edinburgh Arts Festival?  Why not Nether Wallop."

In response, various comedians organised the "First ever International Arts Festival of Nether Wallop".

Billy Connolly was the final act.

Two protesters were “reasonable” in calling Iain Duncan Smith “Tory scum” outside the Conservative party conference, the high court has ruled, in a rejection of an attempt to overturn their acquittal.

Interesting outcome. However part of me considers that rather than being "excusable", it could well be considered "mandatory" 🙂

I was wondering if 30p Lee deserved a thread of his own, but decided against it.

In the whacky world of Britain's leading contender for the annual "Da of the year" competition, he makes a strong title challenge with this...

"Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson has called for asylum seekers to be sent to remote Scottish islands if the government’s Rwanda deportation plan fails.

The controversial MP called for those arriving in the UK via small boats to be housed on the Orkney Islands, which he said would be “perfect” for people fleeing persecution.

Asked about reports the Home Office had considered sending migrants to the Falkland Islands as a backup to the Rwanda scheme, Mr Anderson said it was “a bit far to go” and “not fair on the islanders”.

Edit... Apologies... Article source https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/lee-anderson-tory-rwanda-asylum-rishi-sunak-b2451600.html

They always mention Orkney as if it's miles from anywhere. Why not stick them on the Scilly Isles?

Suggestions the MP in question is Home Secretary James Cleverly. Certainly sounds like him.

Eyewitnesses in the commons saying that it clearly was him, but Cleverly saying it wasn't.

Five minutes in the role and he's f***ing up and lying already.  Yet there'll be blinkered Tory voters out there absolutely adamant that it's only a handful of bad eggs from the past staining the party.

So net migration at record levels after previous figures were revised upwards today oh and guess what percentage of the total came over the chanel in small boats......0.3%. All the focus on small boats when 99.7% of all inward net migration has nothing to do with them. The Tories really are a shower.

Did the rest of them come over in big boats?

Asking for a friend.

Cleverly suddenly deciding that he said some bad words, but trying to suggest he said "shit MP" rather than "shithole", which doesn't fit with the audio.

Rishi in a situation where he can't sack his Home Secretary because he had to sack the previous one last week.

Surely that's worse actually calling a member of the House "shit" ???

Legal Aid for Bozo Boris.........

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jun/06/british-justice-boris-johnson-legal-aid-mother-breadline-austerity

"Boris Johnson is a very rich man, even though he suffers from a self-pitying syndrome that afflicts many of the well-off: believing himself to be poorer than he actually is. Although he once described his £250,000-a-year newspaper column salary as “chicken feed”, and reportedly complained that his prime ministerial annual pay packet of more than £150,000 wasn’t enough to live on, he was already in the top 1% of earners when he lived in No 10.

And he has only prospered since, having moved into a £3.8m Oxfordshire mansion –with nine bedrooms and a moat on three sides – and earned well over £5 million since resigning from the prime ministerial office in disgrace.

Yet this enormously wealthy man, who as prime minister presided over the illegality that saw government officials partying while ordinary citizens could not hold the hand of a dying relative – while also being fined himself for violating the rules – somehow benefits from a taxpayer-funded legal defence in the Partygate inquiry, already to the tune of a quarter of a million pounds."

No Legal Aid for Ruth Perry's family.....................

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2023/nov/26/family-of-headteacher-ruth-perry-refused-legal-aid-for-inquest-into-her-death

"The family of the headteacher Ruth Perry, whose death after a critical Ofsted inspection will be the subject of a high-profile inquest this week, have been refused legal aid to fund their representation just days before the hearing is due to start.

While other interested parties, including Ofsted, the local council and NHS trust, will – as public bodies – have their legal costs paid out of the public purse, the headteacher’s family say they have had to resort to crowdfunding to pay their legal costs.

As of Friday evening, more than £34,000 had been raised from more than 2,300 donations, including many from members of the teaching community in England who are closely following a case which has put the schools inspectorate under the spotlight."

The "deal" between Sunak and Braverman getting an airing today. The bit that bugs me most is this:

"The document also contains other ideas, such as closing down the graduate visa route, and prioritising Russell Group university applicants when evaluating student visa applications."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-67541308

The Russell Group are 24 research-intensive universities who essentially formed a club. Now, for postgraduate students coming to the UK why should these 24 be prioritised? There are over 100 other unis, many of which offer very relevant degree programmes in things like accountancy, business, construction management, the sciences, etc. Is getting a degree in the classics from Cambridge really a priority?

Bit harsh on St Andrews that, despite being currently rated "top university, they would be excluded. But, that's what you get for being too hoity-toity to associate with your peers. Maybe they should get something like a Royal Warrant to compensate.
