That's probably what they thought they were doing by switching sides.

Michael W
Some very disturbing videos on Twitter (which I won't post for obvious reasons) showing people clinging to the undercarriage of planes as they take off. There is seemingly also another showing the inevitable results of this. Awful.

P.S. Just heard the report now, looks like the Taliban intercepted them and persuaded them to go home without a fight. They'd tried to hide inside the rims of the aircrafts wheels and fell onto folks houses from a few hundred feet up. Fucking hell.

No just the rims but anything they think they can hang on to the video's of folk falling off are tragic, not sure why the Americans are taking off with so many folk hanging on
101
China "ready for friendly relations" with the Taliban government. If China and America are going to negotiate with them and deal with them as a legitimate government then you have to imagine the rest of the world will fall into this position.

Haven't seen any sign of them in the airport footage.

China and Russia have told their embassy staff to stay put, although Russia are evacuating non essentials. Looks like they'll be the winners in this rerun of the 19th century Great Game.

They need allies somewhere to help legitamise them.
BigDoddyKane
maybe in long term they have to go through this and let the taliban make such a mess of running things that the population decides to rise up against them and remove them. Or ofcourse the Taliban may make a success of it and everyones happy to live under them. Seems unlikely but what is the realistic choice options apart from letting it run its course? Are there any and what are they? Edited August 16, 2021 by BigDoddyKane

They were shooting in the air to try and disperse the crowd although you would think that such a military presence would be able to do more than that.

Are there any and what are they? The last time the Taliban were in power it brought to an end a chaotic multisided civil war that ensued after the Soviets were kicked out. At one stage there were 3 rival armies shelling each other from different suburbs of Kabul. The Taliban brought relative stability if you kept to their medieval rules, and they claimed to have pretty well brought opium production down to zero, backed up by satellite data. Inevitably some factions will break off eventually and another civil war will ensue. I doubt any foreign powers will bother intervening when it happens. Apart from Pakistan that is, they love an unstable Afghanistan. Edited August 16, 2021 by welshbairn
