I’m pretty certain what will end up happening is along the following lines: Year 0: WC in summer, then 6 UNL group games in Sep/Oct/Nov Year 1: Euros qualifying across 5 double headers Mar/Jun/Sep/Oct/Nov. UNL finalists will have their byes in June so the finals can be played then. Most likely 11 groups of 5 with the top two from each group qualifying. Year 2: Euro playoffs in March (Spots in them determined by some mix of qualifying 3rd place teams and UNL group winners). Exact number of remaining spots depends on how many hosts automatically qualify but if none, you’d be looking at 10 spots so probably 20 teams in the playoffs (I think they’ll go back to 2 legs given that there won’t be enough teams for the 4 team format). Euros itself in the summer. Then Sep/Oct/Nov would again be for the UNL. Year 4: World Cup qualifying across the 5 doubleheaders March/June/Sep/Oct/Nov. Again UNL finalists won’t play in June. The 11 winners automatically make the WC. Year 5: WC playoffs in March. In this case they probably would stick with 4-team playoffs for the remaining 5 berths. 11 group runners up and then 9 teams from the UNL would get into the playoffs. WC itself in the summer. Rinse and repeat. I would merge Nations League with World Cup and Euros qualifying and would have the process take four years. Expand Nations League final series to 12 team knockout. Expand Euros to 32 teams. World Cup and Euros playoffs to be held over two rounds. Four groups of 13 or 14 teams. Group winner: qualify for Nations League, World Cup and Euros. Bye to, and home advantage in, Nations League Quarter-Finals. Runners-up: qualify for NL, WC and EC. Home advantage in NL Round of Twelve. 3rd: qualify for NL, WC and EC. 4th: qualify for WC Playoffs and EC. Bye to, and home advantage in, WC final playoff round. 5th: qualify for WC Playoffs and EC. Home advantage in WC Semi-final playoff ound. 6th: qualify for WC Playoffs and EC. 7th: qualify for EC. 8th: qualify for EC Playoffs. Bye to, and home advantage in, EC Playoffs final round. 9th: qualify for EC Playoffs. Home advantage in EC Playoffs Semi-Final round. 10th: qualify for EC Playoffs. Only issues would be: 1. Would need to find a way to condense previous tournament qualifying before the first time it was held. 2. Would need a bit of jiggery pokery if hosts failed to qualify, but you could just adjust the Playoffs. 3. Having to wait two years to play in a tournament you've qualified for, but the next qualifying campaign would already have started so it's not like you'd be twiddling your thumbs. Pretty much every team from Germany to the Faroes would have something to play for, then. Not like now when the big teams are already through with two or three games to go and the smaller nations have no chance of ever doing anything of note. Much better than a procession for the top teams which is what Euros qualifying already is (and would be even more if it expands to 32 teams as suggested). Under that system every place in the table would be vital. Also fewer groups equals more top teams playing each other and more derbies, so better for telly.
