Probably the reason why a proportion of supporters would welcome the signing of a tall target man is the fact that more often then not we do launch plenty of high balls up the park. If you don't do that you don't need a tall target man. Surely it makes sense to bring in the type of player to suit the tactics you use. Whether that style is pretty or not appreciated by some supporters is a separate issue which has been debated many times before. Broony88 Posted January 12, 2014 Share Posted January 12, 2014 I posted this in the transfer window thread, but heard a rumour today from a St Johnstone fan today that we, along with Dundee, are looking at signing Rory Fallon. Saints have told him he can find another club. Reviews are not favourable to him. Dundee don't learn from previous misdemeanors do they. football maniac Posted January 12, 2014 Share Posted January 12, 2014 Don't think Fallon would be that bad tbh. This is a guy who scored the goal to get New Zealand into the last world cup. He then featured in all 3 games. He is still a regular international and only in november scored against Mexico. Surely the Mexico defence will be tougher to score against than anything the championship has to offer. Also remember seeing him for Aberdeen and he looked a decent target man which offers a different dimension. On a different note got to say the official website is pretty brilliant these days. Colourful, kept up to date and packed with information. Ive said it before, but both Reilly and Lyle are decent enough in the air for the times when the ball is hit long. Both won their fair share of headers yesterday against Gordon and Marr, both very decent centre backs at this level. I have been to every competitive Queens game so far this season and managed to stay awake long enough to see goal-kicks, keepers clearances from pass-backs and defenders clearing their lines by means of the long ball as a regular occurrence outweighing the number of times it is played out by passing on the deck. Even when defenders are trying to play it out or keep possession by passing the ball across the back line it very often resorts to a long kick up the park when the opposition pushes up to close the defenders down, Higgy and Durnan are especially prone to delivering this "out" ball when under pressure. As for your opinion that Reilly and Lyle are good enough in the air, my view is that Lyle is adequate at best with dealing with high balls and headed flick-ons but high balls to Reilly are, in the most part, a waste of time as he would come off worst 9 times out of 10 against a taller, more physical opponent. His strong point is his ability and speed on the deck, even then he could do to man up or get a bit more savvy on how to deal with defenders prone give him a sly nudge or tug just as he is about to control the ball. That lesson may be learned with a bit more experience. As for tactics and formations, I am not expert enough or interested enough in which formation we play, formations are pretty fluid and changeable throughout a game anyway depending on circumstances as they happen. All that concerns me is that, irrespective of whatever style of football we play, we have the type of players available that gives us the best chance to adapt to what is needed, and that includes hitting long balls out of defence. Ian McCall was appointed manager on 10th November 2005 after Stuart Lovell had held the fort for a couple of weeks when Iain Scott was sacked. McCall departed on 28th April 2007 following the last game of the season against Airdrie United, though it had been confirmed in the prior week that he would be leaving at the end of the season. He was in charge for 17.5 months including three transfer windows. During that time he signed a total of 26 players for the club. Can you name them? As before some ground rules: 1 - Re-signing players who were already at the club to new contracts does not count. Signing players who had previous spells at the club but had been elsewhere in the meantime though does of course count. 2 - Handing professional contracts to players who came up through the youth ranks does not count. 3 - Loans do count. As does signings directly from another side or free agents obviously. McCall's total of 26 includes 7 loan signings and 19 fully contracted ones. 24 of the 25 actually played a game for us at first team level, one only made it as far as being an unused substitute in competitive games. Six of his signings would start in the Scottish Cup Final just over one year after his departure, he certainly had more success in the market than Scott, though he had his failures too.
