Anyway, having just watched the Sociedad highlights (they were excellent and Sommer is a fantastic keeper) it will never fail to astound me that Robbie Savage, a man who never finished higher than 8th in the EPL (but was mostly to be found fighting relegation) is invited to give his "wisdom" on Champions' League football. We don't ask journalists to take part in penalty shootouts so why do broadcasters insist on having illiterate ex-footballers do journalists' jobs ? Big 5 League teams won all of their five matches against non-Big Five League teams, by a total margin of 14 goals. Two, or at the very most three, of the groups look to have any doubt about who will go through. All of the teams from diddy countries will be out by the last 8, most by the last 16. The 'Swiss model' replacing the group sounds completely risible but the play-offs (and incentive to avoid them) may reduce the amount of meaningless or effectively meaningless games at this stage.
