Best guess is because they knew a major rebuild was needed and maybe felt a manager with security would be more willing to look long term than one who has the threat of the sack over him from day one. You know I've reflected that I made this post several times since the season started. It's startling how badly I called it! He was tolerably entertaining whilst things were going alright, a fifth placed finish last season seemed fine in the circumstances.
