beesher
A lot of it for me is to alleviate boredom. I find a lot of social occasions boring af but if you’re drunk it is literally impossible to be bored.

For about five or six years I binned drinking but have had a drink at social occasions over the last six months or so and managed not to get too smashed or caused any bother etc beyond upsetting a group of folk by telling them how shite ABBA are. Not good for sleep, immune system etc though. Really struggled to even go to some social events without a drink so I’ve maybe found a compromise where I can have a drink in special occasions and not randomly booze at home etc. Only took 30 years of training to achieve what seems like a reasonable position.

And if there is indeed a problem, what makes it gimmicky? 11 hours ago, Jacksgranda said: Just take it a day at a time, this setting targets of weeks/months is stupid. Why is it stupid? This is a Scottish football forum. I don’t think anyone here is “showing off”. I said earlier, there is a thread dedicated to “what are you drinking?” and I don’t think it’s cream soda. 7 hours ago, throbber said: But you are not taking up a new hobby or embarking on any sort of difficult task you are just not consuming alcohol. Why would you need to feel part of anything for doing that? If you are wanting to knock the alcohol on the head why not just abstain from going out to the pub with mates until the month is over? I don’t know why other people have to come into the equation at all. You seem to be forgetting that “just not consuming alcohol” is a difficult task for some. It might be easy for you, and many other members of the forum as they have kindly pointed out, but it’s not easy for everyone. You don’t need to tell them what they’re doing is stupid. Abstaining from the pub with your mates until the month is over is one thing. Abstaining from the pub by yourself is another. Abstaining from drinking in the house due to boredom and loneliness is another altogether. For some people, they’d be abstaining from the only socialising that they get.

Drinking is such an ingrained part of our culture that sometimes you need to commit to something like dry Jan to give yourself a break. Aye same. Ended 2023 eating shite more regularly and drinking a lot at weekends. Hoping there is some AF beer in the pub tomorrow, though, as I cba drinking Coke Zero or some other marked up fizzy shite for a few hours. Keen to lose a few pounds but for the next month or so i have a very early rise on a Monday - I want to try and get a proper rest at the weekend so im not knackered before the week even begins because my sleep pattern is fucked. Can't say i'm doing Dry Jan, though, as I'm going to the Whisky Festival later in the month. Edited January 6 by Todd_is_God
Ross.
Going on about 3 years since I more or less stopped drinking. Probably drunk around a bottle of wine and 4 or 5 beers in that time, usually just having one drink with dinner on some occasion or other. I have no idea at this point if I miss having a bevvy or not. Turns out I can talk just as much shite sober as I can when pished. Most zero alcohol beers taste close enough to their full bevvy equivalent that you don’t notice the difference now, which is handy when in the pub because I can still tan 10+ of them when I would be bagged up after a couple of soft drinks, but that also means I don’t save money on nights out. The absence of an almost permanent hangover and a few days of the fear per week is still quite nice. Edited January 6 by Ross.

FYi I am not meaning what I said at anyone on p and b and didn’t even see a comment where someone said they were doing dry January. Also I am a massive boozer and have been for some 20 years so know plenty about the presence of alcohol and how so many activities revolve around it and how it’s never a simple case of just not drinking for some. I do think the solutions people seek come from within though and don’t need to be part of a Twitter hashtag. I don’t think anyone is ever forcing drink down your throat or on nights out either FWIW. Despite drinking frequently since I was 18 in 2004 I can’t give a simple enough answer as to whether or not I find it difficult to not drink. I usually want one around 4 o clock as I am a creature of habit but once I’ve had my dinner and sat down I don’t think about it so much. Last night I had to go out to shop for something and bought beer and wine in with the mindset of “it will be drank anyway” but as my mrs wasn’t doing it I decided to give it a miss so I think today will be 50/50 if I do it or not.

Will post back here when I inevitably fail............................ 9 days, 9 fucking days I lasted. I blame my wife, Chilean Merlot with the pasta. alta-pete
I was off it from late October through November and then December was just a disgrace. My birthday, a week in the sun, couple of work do’s and then a fortnight off work for the festive. I actually think my pre-December abstinence triggered some sort of catch up reaction for what I’d missed out on. (I await the PnB fitness/motivational coaches coming to tell me I’m just a greedy b*****d) Went back to dry before the return to work on the 4th and the sleeping pattern is still fucked. Bed for 10pm, now midnight on a Tuesday and I’m posting on PnB. . Hoping it sorts itself out soon.

The DA
I'm still on track but yesterday and today were the worst so far. If someone had opened a bottle of Malbec and offered me a glass or six, I'd have crumbled.

Desp
I've still not touched a drop this year and it's been relatively easy so far. I'm not exactly out all the time, so not going to a pub for weeks on end isn't out of the ordinary, but the wife and I do like a few drinks in the house on a Friday & Saturday night. She's still drinking but I've been quite happy with either some fizzy juice or non-alcoholic beers at the weekend. I've found Heineken 0.0% & Guinness 0.0 to be excellent and for me are as close to the actual stuff as you could possibly hope for. Never, just never, go near the Tennents Zero. An absolute abomination. I don't expect to last the entire month as I'm heading down to Yorkshire on the 27th to catch up with some family and have a day at the football, but we'll see how that goes.
Gorgie greatness
1 weekend to go! Heading for mussy races on the 3rd. Will need to beer up on the Friday or I’ll be guttered at the races
alta-pete
Yup. Breaking it with pals coming over on the 27th. Been remarkably unremarkable this year. A doddle. Copious amounts of Lucky Saint drunk though and - an absolute game changer discovery for me - Tanqueray 0%. For all those scoffers and sceptics out there, I’d say give it a go. Not even not too terrible, a most acceptable aperitif if mixed with decent (Fever Tree) tonic.
deegee
I’ve been doing this Dry January, as I know I drank far too frequently last year (away most weeks for a couple of nights due to work) and we were in Tenerife start of December right up till Xmas, and I felt I was a fat mess by late December. I have done this Dry Jan twice before and like now, it’s been a dawdle. I actually only really enjoy beers and I was getting fussy about even that by end of last year. Test for me is this week as I’m off to Belfast on Wednesday for 2 nights and Dublin next week for 2 nights; both with work and I’ll get bored in the hotel. I’ll maybe go for a Chinese or something for dinner, as that’ll avoid sitting in a bar with grub and Guinness for company all night.
