He's just left the field for treatment on said finger, he bowled nearly 30 overs yesterday, a big ask for a guy who hasn't played red ball cricket in a couple of years, on a pitch that is likely to turn on days 4 and 5 England being limited in how much their dedicated spinner is able to be used could be the major difference here, Root can hold an end up with his part time spin and even chip in with the odd wicket but he isn't anywhere near as effective as Moeen playing at his level or, for that matter Nathan Lyon who could well be the key here.

Crazy how much this match has ebbed and flowed, Australia looked for all intents and purposes this morning like taking a first innings lead, only for Khawalja to get out playing a T20 shot and the tail enders to play some equally daft shots to give their wickets away.

England looked to be in the ascendancy again but two quick wickets in that short 20 minutes between the rain, in terrible conditions for the batsmen, overcast and the ball swinging around and Australia right back in it, it really is anyone's game this, certainly won't be a draw unless the rain continues into tomorrow.

One final point, Crawley standing at his crease looking for the umpire to overule him getting out caught behind because it was too cloudy is hideously embarrassing.

Aussies set 281 to win. Moeen's ability to bowl and how effective he can be with a sore finger could play a big part in the outcome.

As could the weather.  Looks a bit iffy for tomorrow.  You know fine well England would try and knock these off in a session.  Hope Australia have the guts to go for it.

The day one declaration looks increasingly like an awful decision.

Just doesn't look like enough runs - only an Aussie collapse or rain are going to stop them winning this test.

Yep, to me it smacked of "look at us, look how maverick we are". I could have sort of understood it if they were down to 2 tail enders, and it might have been worth the gamble if they had got a wicket or two before the close. Root was still there though and looking in great nick, could easily have added another 50 almost single handed.
