That’s really not what’s happening, though. Brook was going along fine and got very unlucky, nothing to do with the field. Stokes then trying too hard again attempting a big shot that wasn’t there.

England undoubtedly in trouble here, though. Need a couple of big partnerships.

1 big quick partnership between Bairstow and Root gets it to 297-6, Bairstow stumped on 78 from 78 balls.

Fair fucks to England.  They’ve already made sure this game won’t end in a draw.  It’s supremely entertaining.

Always tough to call this early, but yhe pitch looks pretty flat so far. Would be interesting to see how the Aussies fare should they need to bat tonight, looks a bit cloudy now.

Ton up for Root.

I think that declaration is daft. No need for it at all.

At 398/4 it would have been daft. At 398/8 it makes more sense. But the advantage has been frittered away by not taking any wickets before the close of play

Fun day, but think I'd rather be in the Australian camp after that - it's a flat deck, and if they get in and bat for two days and coerce Stokes into risking his knee then it's a problem for Ingerland...

I’m in agreement with the below, Root could have put another 50 runs on himself if Robinson stuck around. If they were 9 down I’d understand it, but Robinson is more than capable with the bat.

It might have worked if they got an opener & nightwatchmen in those overs, but with Root in attack mode & Robinson being a decent tailender they could have biffed another 50 runs.

Broady might be on one.

Ownage is ownage.  And delightful to see.  The difference between Smith and Warner post sandpaper-gate is gargantuan.  England massively on top here.

Not any more they aren't.

Have a wee feeling the surprise declaration could end up being a massive own goal by Stokes, his own 'We're gonna have a bowl' Nasser Hussain in Brisbane moment?

Changed daze!

Quote

News just to hand from Ali Martin, our cricket correspondent: Moeen Ali has been fined 25% of his match fee for using some sort of medical spray on his fingers while bowling yesterday. There was a similar incident with Ravindra Jadeja using painkilling cream on his bowling finger when Australia toured India earlier this year. Foreign substances being a no-no, and all that.

A Brylcreamed Fred Truman will be spinning (sic) in his grave!
