Not just harsh but absolute nonsense. 4 years ago we were nearly in the semi finals.

Is that what we have to cling on to? A quarter final which we lost?

Desperate stuff indeed.

Could Japan make the final?

South Africa in the quarters, which will be very difficult but surely winnable given the home advantage. Should they win that then they'd have every chance of beating Wales or France.

Lots of ifs, but not impossible.

The dreadfull kicking was obviously Townsends game plan, for that alone he should go. If we had kept ball in had we would have at lease had a chance, but giveing them posesion was brutal. His choice of players in the squad was also poor

The plan to kick the ball away was fucking woeful. Not even smart enough to kick to touch and put pressure on their line out.

For all the talk of competition at Centre both of them were shocking with no creativity or power. Harris did better on the wing o perhaps the tactics were the issue. Not passing the ball from 10 to 12 and opening up the game.

I'd fucking love them to empty Wales

Should have won if it wasn't for a horrendous call.

But it was hardly a dreadful performance or loss.

Both our national teams are continual failures since the Millennium. Nothing changes with either. Can't defend 20 years of failure. Same with the football. 21 years of failure. The media really need to go after both associations properly.

My Irish partner nailed it when she said it's pretty embarrassing to be a Scottish sports fan right now. Ireland aren't good at most things but at least they have the odd success. Scotland fans literally have nothing to cling on to. Harsh words but fair

A bit harsh.

Japan have spent 6 years building towards this world cup. They've thrown a lot of money at the national side and the Sunwolves, and they've 'nationalised' a large number of non-Japanese to strengthen their squad with precisely this point in time in mind.

I wouldn't call today a failure.  The way the team came back in the second half shows that this team has fight, and tbh we had by hardest the pool with Japan as 3rd seed.

What is worrying is a pattern of dropping out of matches for periods....whether it's losing tries in the first 5 minutes or failing to compete when being put under pressure. Sadly, it's become a trademark of Scotland under Townsend.

Is he the man to continue in charge ? I'd imagine that will be looked at.

Not even that. Failing to win their own line out. The call was borderline. It’s another in a litany of excuses for failure.

We have nobody anywhere near the level of Russell at FH. Hastings is improving but isn’t there yet.

Sadly, there's no doubt that Finn had one of his heads gone, off days today...

Was it really failure to lose to one of the best teams in the world who finished as runners up?

That’s always the problem with Finn. He rarely, if ever, has just an average 6/10 game. The way he plays he always looks fantastic or awful. Sadly today it was the latter.

Would we have made the QF if Japan had a full week to recover like us in the group match?

Posted pretty much the same on a pal's Facebook post, Japan have played a blinder by bringing in players to beef up their forwards, which was where they were weakest before. 2 great results against England aside, we have regressed under Toony, we were a more rounded side under Cotter.
