  1. Good to see Derryn getting a goal for Broughty on Saturday...and then promptly getting sent off. Some things never change. Welcome back wee man.
  2. When I worked in Cockburn St, my two favourites were the Halfway House, a tiny wee picturesque pub on the Scotsmans Steps and the Jinglin' Geordie right next door which was George Best's hangout when he drank for Hibs. On Rose St, I took to frequenting the grubbiest pub in the street, Robertson's Bar which is probably the last old man's pub in Rose St and run by nice, friendly Polish lasses. Down in Leith, The Tourmalet is a nice, quiet wee pub back off the main strip and handily placed if you are walking down to Easter Road from the centre. If you're going to Tynie then I would suggest The Diggers as all the pubs on Gorgie Road are terrible.
  3. Both were a little grubby around the edges but I think disgrace is taking things a bit far. Cas Rock played host to Mogwai's first gig outside of Glasgow which was a truly religious experience and seeing Nirvana in Calton Studios was amazing. It is true that the floor of the Studio was horribly sticky at club nights but I'm willing to let that go. The Tap was much more horrible than either Cas or Calton. It reeked of a thousand Mission gigs. I moved away from Edinburgh some time ago but I still miss the Venue. Some great nights in that place.
  4. Was it the Liquid Rooms. I actually forgot about that place. Think they still have the odd gig there but it's more of a club venue now. I saw White Stripes in there.
  5. Prices are up this season I see. £55 for a ref and £27.50 for lino's last season. With the abuse handed out at some grounds mind you, £60 still wouldn't be tempting me to don the black.
  6. Unless you want to see a shit pop star at the Castle or some crappy top division indie jobbers at the Corn Exchange (hello The Snuts) Edinburgh has a shite live music scene, but it wasn't always like this. As @tamthebam pointed out The Venue, Cas Rock and Calton Studios were all brilliant venues on a par with the likes of King Tut's and Broadcast in Glasgow. All 3 fucked by the developer's grubby paw. Now all Edinburgh has is Sneaky Pete's with it's annoyingly placed pillars and Bannermans, where they play both kinds of music, punk and grebo. I saw so many great small gigs in Edinburgh in the early 90's but sadly those days wont be back for today's kids.
  7. Jesus, I loved Ally Sheedy so much.
  8. Nobody has been our best player this season. We have a Championship squad playing Championship football. A McInnes or a Neil might possibly get us to 10th with the new manager bounce because there are a couple of other teams who are as bad as we are but McPake simply cannot get the best out of what meagre talents we have. He can't change a game when things aren't working. He has to go now or we are definitely finishing bottom.
  9. Excellent tune. Maybe their last good one. Hard to believe that the same band that gave us "One Way To Go" and "She's A Superstar" would go on to give us the mewling pish that is "The Drugs Don't Work"
  10. I like the 13th Floor Elevators a lot but Parquet Courts absolutely knock them out the park when it comes to "Slide Machine".
  11. Nah, d'you know what. I think I'm with you on this one. And I love Tim Buckley.
  12. Absolutely. Norwich goes from an 8 down to a 4 in the blink of an eye.
  13. Surely nobody is in any doubt now. McPake lucked out last season because the team started playing in the last 8 games or so. He was fucking rubbish in the Championship and should have been binned halfway through the season. How he thinks he has assembled a squad that can achieve 10th place in the top league is beyond me. We look like we've got Gretna's point total in our sights at the moment. I've no idea who we get in to replace him but literally nobody could do a worse job. Either we sack him now or we are down without even a whimper. Fucking embarrassing.
  14. Not sure what's been happening at the back with us the last couple of weeks. We've had the best defensive record in the league this season and then suddenly we conceded 4 goals to Kirriemuir last week in one of the local diddy cups and then today, incredulously, 4 goals to Couper Angus in the league. We won 7-4 but that's by the by. Worrying. Another 5 goals for Josh Skelly today. Must be on about 50 for the season so far. All the other results went the way you'd expect today. The most impressive being Lochee Utd beating FWE 8-1 away.
  15. Broughty have resigned one of the most exciting players at this level in recent years, Derryn Kesson from Peterhead on loan til January. Thoroughly looking forward to seeing the wee man back in action. Broughty away to Couper Angus today giving us a good opportunity to bounce back from last week's frankly awful cup defeat at home to Kirrie.
  16. I paid a tenner to get into Sensation in Dundee. It was like the fairground in Father Ted. I still curse it every time I walk past.
  17. I believe I can be of some assistance here. I am a Dundonian who lived in Edinburgh for 20 years and who has a Glaswegian girlfriend of 16 years. No wait, that doesn't sound right. I have had a Glaswegian girlfriend for 16 years. I too found Edinburgh a slightly standoffish place when I lived there. Not necessarily unfriendly, just a bit more reserved. I had an English flatmate who was very much in the Edinburgh camp who always said of Glasgow "It's not that they're more friendly, they're just facking nosey." I think there is a lot in this. It's the bus stop analogy. In Dundee and, to a lesser extent Glasgow, you cannot sit at a bus stop without someone at the bus stop interacting with you. I'm 48. It has literally never not happened to me in Dundee. In Edinburgh, people would not welcome such convivialities. Indeed, the first reaction would probably be "shit, I'm in trouble here" unless it was a wee old lady, and even then... As for Aberdeen, I spent many a great night out there in the early 90's. It was fun, the people were fun, the buildings shimmered. The place literally smelled of money. Now it's a bit down on it's luck. The buildings are just grey, the money's gone, the fun has faded but it will be back. It's a nice place really. Except Torry. And it's got Codona's. No other c**t on here has got Codona's have they?
  18. The IPL is mildly diverting. Been some good games. It's just not the same in a mostly empty stadium in the middle east though. Can anyone answer me this. Why does every team have an array of beautiful Indian princesses cheering them on in the rich seats. They can't all be the owners, can they? I don't think they are the WAG's either. Anyone?
