The New Raith Rovers Thread

When January arrives, I always think it's time that the club should be looking to tie down the players who are vital for next season. There will always be some unknowns as we don't know where we'll be next season or who we'll be facing, but you should focus on the players you really need so you don't lose them to a rival club.

Thus far, we have Toshney, Benedictus, Bates, McGurn and Stewart under contract. I still think McGurn is the best 'keeper we have, but McKinnon sees it differently. Toshney and Bene are in the category I'd have said were vital. The next ones we need to make stringent effort to keep, are Thomson and Vaughan.

Those guys aren't the only ones I'd keep, far from it, but they are the ones I believe we should focus on.

As for it being too early for this discussion? Maybe, but only because we've suffered postponements. Two-thirds of the season to the last 10 games are about the right time, IMO.

Matthews and Callachan are also under contract for next season as well..

There's a lot of talk about grabbing the cash and it making good business sense.

Sorry but I have to disagree. A quick bit of extra cash is all good and well but it should never be done to the detriment of your regular clientele. In the short term you get the money but in the long term it is likely to do more damage than good. I could and would never do it for my own business.

Add to that that we will lose an element of home advantage and, after the Hibs match on 19th March we only have this plus Falkirk at home, we should be doing all we can to help maximise the chances of picking up points here.

I wonder what the reaction will be if we missed out on 4th place by a point and we look back at this match...

Well said, selling our soul for bigot gold, shameful decision by our board, I hear all the financial/business talk, that's not football, you don't give the opposition any advantage, and especially these fuckwits

Speaking of LV, I seem to recall he was due to go down south to see his specialist a fortnight (1st week in Feb) ago to see if he could step up his training, given that the outcome hasn't been reported I'd guess the news this time perhaps wasn't as good as hoped for.

Might be next season before we see him after all.

Bambino, Hibs poster on here( a mate of Vaughans) has kept us updated through it all and told us, he got on fine but would be another 2 weeks away from full training. That was about a week ago..

He'll back in time to win us the playoffs...

God forbid!

I've no desire to return to that zoo in it's current format (and state!).

My memory of our last time there has scarred me for life, until they sort it out into a decent league (or we find hard a dozen millionaire board members) we are better off challenging down here imo.

Might sound a tad unambitious but most of the teams that are up there are in hock up to their necks trying to stay there.

I agree with you to a certain extent, but just as staying in the top league for too long causes teams to go stale, the same can be said for staying in this one too long. The likes of Kilmarnock and up until this season St Mirren are the epitome of mundane shite. Hearts, Hibs and even now Rangers are showing that healthy movement between leagues is something which can rejuvenate a club and help it grow. I imagine the same thing will happen with Dundee Utd when they come down.

Just out of curiosity but where have you heard that Falkirk are interested in Cuthbert and Thomson?

The players linked with them was something I heard from from a Falkirk fan (with reliable connections) I work with and it was primarily Cuthbert that he'd heard they were interested in as they are resigned to losing Rogers back to Aberdeen. The subject then went onto other players and he suggested that Thomson would fit the bill there too as they are light in the RB position and see him as a solid defender and useful wingback.

Admittedly nothing too concrete but the sort of intel that has enough logic behind it to prove credible.

Aye we did Yoss but we had Iain Munro latterly and that was very very bad.

We also had streets full of buckie bottles after home games where you couldn't get a beer in the Novar for masses of unwashed OF fannies both downsides which I could put up with but it was the weekly trousering from nonentities like Killie and Motherwell that I hated, I fear we'd be much the same if we were there now.

Our crowd average was terrible that 2nd season too.

Our crowd average was terrible? Just no. Our current Board would kill for those crowds. From memory our average crowds in the Premier League were around 4000-4500

While that last season was shite, the first two Premier League seasons were excellent.

I'm sure our average the season after we were last in the Premier was around 3500. Oh to have that now :(

If you look at thr attendances in the premier now that's a very good average
