Ro Sham Bo
1 hour ago, CountryBumpkin said: What were you expecting that hasn't happened? All players signed by start of July? We've got a new manager in who needs time to evaluate his team, identify the weaknesses and find players who will make those areas stronger. I don't think that was really possible by the time July started. I'd rather Murray takes his time and finds the right players that will improve us and we won't be in a Mendy, Riley-Snow or Keatings situation again. I've not seen a lot of centre back signings at this level that I'd have wished were joining us so far to be fair. Now that it's July, we'll have more options available from clubs in England and potentially further afield if we want to as those contracts will have expired and players released I think most people probably expected he'd address the obvious priority areas first. Instead he's signed players you could argue we didn't need and left us still woefully short in the defence and attack. He may well have loan deals lined up that have been agreed verbally, but in the absence of any news I would guess that is why some people are getting a bit twitchy.

CALDERON
These games don't matter any more than the numerous closed doors bounce matches you get during the season. If I read that Rovers had lost 2-1 to Qos, or drawn 1-1 with Kelty, at the bottom of a FFP article then I wouldn't care. I do wonder how much value there is in having fans in attendance. I'm hardly Mr Positive if I don't like what I see, but booing the team off after a glorified training session is wild. Don't get me wrong, if this is the squad when we start the league season I'll be as unhappy as anyone. But there's 4 weeks to go and the manager isn't long in the door. He hasn't said he's happy with this as the final squad, he's said that he is looking for the right players and that at the moment some other parts have to move for that to happen. Other than go and sign random trialists to appease people who want things done quickly , I'm not sure what else he can do? Looking at the highlights of the trialist there, I'm happy to keep looking.
Raithie
My worry with loans is it's once in a blue moon we actually get someone decent. Poplatnik was fine for the short time he actually got on the pitch but apart from that I'm racking my brains on who was a real gem of a player we've had on loan. Booth and Hardie (in his 1st spell) are two that spring to mind but that was donkeys ago.

He'll be nowhere near ready for first team action yet, and that isn't a slight against the lad. For me, I think we need to be bringing in two centre halves and one centre forward as a minimum. It's hard to say when clubs will first start making their moves in the loan market. You can get a bit of an idea as to who might not be in plans with players who aren't travelling on any foreign camps (Dylan Tait, while not a player we'd need, is an example). I'd expect that any loan we do bring in will probably be from down south and a bit of a wildcard much in the way Varion was last season. This season in particular there's a feeling that both ourselves and the clubs around us are cutting their cloth a bit more frugally. No team has really raced out into the market to bring in 6 or 7 players with a complete rebuild. As ComeOnYouRaith says, Ugwu was on trial for Falkirk in a friendly. He'd been offered a deal by Morton but has turned it down and nobody has gone for him immediately. I suspect that's probably the case for a few players at this level - clubs are maybe less keen to stump up for wages which might be inflated compared to last season with the rise in the cost of living. It's probably why you're also seeing clubs take gambles like Caley with Steven Boyd. Time will tell how it pans out. We've still got one more preseason game to go, and just under two weeks to make some moves before our first competitive game. Folk can lose the rag all they want over being 'entertained' but the reality is none of the players or management will really care about the result. Fwiw, I'd also be happy to have Gozie back. He's had his fitness issues in the past with injuries but he's a known quantity. I'd be confident we could get a good partnership out of him with Gullan. Generally agree, except I don’t think Ugwu solves anything Pops wouldn’t, and offers less.

However, the reaction to the breakout pass was good, and he’s getting time and learning, so I don’t blame him that much, it was a lovely strike.

Obviously he was at the wrong end of the age scale and Covid curtailed the season, but Steven MacLean was a decent loan signing. Weighed in with a couple of crucial goals and was good at talking Bowie through games. I thought Hardie was good in his second spell with us as well, the difference being he had Barr and Johnston supplying the service rather than Connolly and Craigen. stevoraith
The quietus is deafeningThis statement keeps being trotted out and it’s just bizarre. What do you expect to hear?“We tried to sign the big lad but he decided to go to Partick, then we went for that wee quick guy but he wanted £700 a week and we could only offer £500. Now nobody else wants to talk to us because they know they are, at best, our third choice”. No club ever has, or ever will publicly discuss signing targets before they are signed so I’m really not sure where the complaints about ‘deafening silence’ come from or what else they expect. When you read transfer rumours in the press it’s all from the big clubs and it’ll either be made up or leaked from an agent who has an agenda to push up the price of their client. The media isn’t interested in our level of football so that’s not going to happen. Murray has said in interviews that he knows where we need to strengthen. That’s as much as can be said.
