I was genuinely there just the other day. 😄

Bast*rd bus from the leisure park to the centre went on a grand tour of northern Dunfermline and Wellwood/Townhill.

On the subject of signs in Dunfermline, this one (ironically beside Dunfermline Town station) raised a smile to the point a photo was required.  No expense spared:

Also, why does Dunfermline love shoehorning in a Crieff reference everywhere.  Not quite as bad as signs for Kilmarnock in Edinburgh, but getting there.

That annoyed me from a very young age. A pleasant little place is Crieff, but it's got absolutely no business being on roadsigns in Dunfermline.

This sign at Gleneagles always makes me smile.

"How shall we order the sign for the primary exit to the world-renowned luxury Gleneagles hotel?"

"Do they not all come in by helicopter?"

"Probably.  In that case, let's stick Dunfermline* up top, just in case folk going to Fife get to Stirling and think:  you know what... lets add on 15 miles of awful windy road, just for a laugh"

"Don't forget Muckhart too"

"Can't put that and not Glendevon, which is en-route"

"FineFFS.  Anywhere else?"

"Better stick Gleneagles on at the end there I suppose.  You just never know..."

*in all seriousness, the only people that would find that Dunfermline label remotely useful are people in Blackford (pop. 910) wanting to go to Dunfermline.

A twinned city. Presumably with Kabul.

Twinned with Vichy

One place is associated with shame and disgrace, a blot on its country's reputation and the other was the seat of the French Collaborationist Government in the War.

Amongst others, it's twinned with Trondheim (the ancient capital of Norway), which reminds me of the following entertaining tale:

An older friend who grew up in Abbeyview (aka Scabbyview; the roughest part of Dunfermline) at the time told me that a representative from Trondheim came over to officially 'open' the council's new scheme that they'd called 'Trondheim Parkway', as a way of keeping the twinning active / meaningful (ie. some Fife councillor instigated the whole thing, hoping for a jolly over to Norway).

The Norwegians turned up, took one look at it, voiced their displeasure about them naming this abomination below after their beautiful city, and f***ed off back home without conducting the ceremony.  Probably not talked to Dunfermline since.

Following the flattening of that entire area, testament to how much of a short-lived sh*thole it was, it now looks like this:

Once you get out in the sticks there are signs everywhere for Cleish. Cleish is very beautiful but it has a manse, an old school, a farm building, an old phone box and that’s about it. Population about 7 yet you’d think it was New York given the amount of signs dedicated to it around Fife and Kinross.

It's like the signs for Madderty, sort of somewhere between Auchterarder and Crieff. I say sort of, as I'm sure it's a P&K in-joke. Pretty sure it doesn't actually exist.

Twinned with Brigadoon?
