jmothecat
I've always got Whyte & Mackay in stock in my house for the likes of the hot toddies etc. (or a few of my friends like whisky with ginger beer), don't think I've ever poured one neat to drink by itself though. If I'm in the pub and someone offers me a drink I'll sometimes take something like that instead of flogging them for a malt. I don't tend to drink any other spirit all that often. Always take it still just neat though, and while there's no major satisfaction with it there's nothing wrong with it. There seems to be a distinct lack of opinion on which of the cheap blends is best. Whyte and Mackay and Grouse are what I tend to keep in the house. Less keen on Bells, Grants or High Commissioner.
SweeperDee
- Caol Ila - a new one, pretty excited... You'll be very happy. Let it sit in your glass for around 10 minutes to let it settle. The smell you get when it reaches for your nose is tremendous.

Probably because nobody really bothers going around spending the money trying to figure it out. It's more of a "that'll do" when it comes to blends.

They're probably identical to one of the branded ones.

Supporting local jobs, aren't I...? Anyway, back to the decent stuff - my brothers are erratic with present buying quality so my old man's giving them suggestions for his Christmas presents and he's requested a number of times that he wants some more Balblairs. I look forward to helping make an early dent on them over Christmas. He always ply's us with lots of different whiskies over Christmas. It truly is a wonderful time of year.
Silvio Tattiescone
My dad loves his whisky so I reckon he'll be dead pleased with his Xmas present - http://amzn.eu/cj2u43M

It's not Grouse. I got that from someone who very definitely knows.
Ziggy
In my experience supermarket blends aren't the same as branded blends. The malt to grain whisky tends to be different. The lowest I know of was 15% malt to 85% grain.
welshbairn
I just wish that someone would make a cheap blended whisky as dry as a Highland malt.

Last I heard M&S 12 was Deanston. Which considering most of it goes to blend is no bad thing - a decent dram imo
jmothecat
I was given a bottle of the Waitrose Speyside a couple of years ago which was very nice. No idea where it's from though.

invergowrie arab
There's no waitrose in Dundee if that helps? On that subject Tesco's own Islay is perfectly drinkable. The Speyside is rank but I think it's maybe just that I find some speysides are rank. It has that GlenRothes or Singleton tequila aftertaste.
jmothecat
Speyside?A region of Scotland. Famous in footballing terms for the mighty Maroons and for producing Whisky. Waitrose?A supermarket, but probably not the one Jarvis Cocker was referring to. Bottle? A vessel that is used to contain whisky or messages.

gannonball
Drinking highland park 12 now. Don't know if my taste buds have changed but I find it pretty tasteless these days plus a tad rough if that makes sense. Strange as when I first started drinking whisky properly it was my go to whisky.
Tony Ferrino
My dad is 82 and a bit of a connoisseur. Earlier this year he was sent a bottle of Japanese Whisky by his youngest brother, which they both described as superb. I had some too and it was nice, but then again I can't tell the difference between Frosty Jacks and Strongbow.
