I watched Midsommar last night.

What an utterly odd film. I definitely laughed at some parts that I probably wasn't supposed to find funny, like when the old guy didn't die from the cliff ritual so needed to be bonked on the head by the mallet. Still, it must have had something as usually a film of that length will have me zoning out towards the end but it kept me engaged throughout.

I think you're supposed to find them funny. Ari Aster has a sense of humour. The cinema I was in was laughing a lot (a bit uncomfortably I guess?) at those scenes.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of political criticisms of it as doom-laden and accepting of our inability to truly change things but, also, look at the guy's work before. Go to someone else if you want that he's very good at depicting why we are where we are now. I felt it certainly achieved that, and the ultimate message of the worthwhile things being spending good times with family and loved ones is apolitical but also probably true!

It was pretty bloated though, and dragged towards the middle. Probably the weakest of his most recent three films but he'll struggle to make anything as good as the Big Short again, peerless

This feels like it's in direct conversation with Adam Curtis's stuff. That interview from 2019 between the two where Curtis says "baby boomers [are] projecting their own fear of mortality onto the planet…trapping us in the depressed mind of a dying hippy" feels like it's a criticism that could be levelled against this.

Anyway, I saw The Matrix Resurrections and loved it. Neo is Lana Wachowski and Trinity is her love of creating held hostage by the corporate machine. The love for this will depend entirely on how much someone loves incredibly on the nose meta commentary but the targets for criticism are all deserving. It's funny that Ben Shapino hates it given Neil Patrick Harris quotes him at length.

I get that Adam Mckay doesn't do subtlety but I wasn't particularly enamoured with Don't Look Up. It's okay - not good but not terrible - and I laughed a few times but it was about 30 minutes too long.

On a separate note, I saw West Side Story last week and enjoyed it. It does some things better than the original and misses the mark with others. I actually liked Ansel Elgort's version of "Maria" but he was a bit of a personality vacuum. On the other hand, Ariana DeBose as Anita was, by some distance, the stand-out performance.

The Untouchables. I had never seen it before.
Starring Sean Connery doing the same accent he does in all of his movies.
It's still an enjoyable film - not De Palma's best but some nice scenes, some paying a nod to other classic films.

The Union Station shootout scene is a total homage to the Odessa Steps sequence in Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin.

The Matrix Resurrections

Honestly I thought it was pretty shite and the ending was very predictable.

Don’t understand why they felt the need to make it apart from the cash obviously

Agreed thought it was shite.

The Kings Man watched lasted night. Thought was decent. Better than the last one

Home Alone, Home Alone 2.

The first is a bona fide classic. Some of the burglars mugging is a bit OTT for my sophisticated tastes but the big set piece finale of cartoon violence is hilarious. 9/10

I'd never seen the two so close together before and hadn't appreciated how much of a scene for scene remake it actually is. Substitute shop staff and pizza boy for hotel staff, creepy old man for creepy old lady, change some locations, done. The finale lacks panache and the taller one continually squeaking "harry" was getting on my tits. The bit where he repeatedly got bricked in the face was good though. Not bad exactly but not as good and quite pointless. 6/10, but minus one for giving Trump a cameo, 5/10.

Face/Off

Ridiculous nonsense but very entertaining. I enjoyed this at the time and it has been worth a repeat watch now and then. Now I'm no medical expert, but I suspect there are one or two essential elements of the plot which don't quite add up. Ignoring this though there are some great action scenes, with the speedboat chase at the end one of my favourite movie scenes from the 90s. 7.5/10

Bing Bong is about to sacrifice himself :bairn

Thankfully I missed that. Jesus.

There are 3 movie scenes that always have me (as per P&B vernacular) on the verge of tears.

Spoiler

The aforementioned spoiler, when the lads pick up the sled and start carrying it to the finish line in Cool Runnings, and when Paddington opens the door at the end of Paddington 2, to find Aunt Lucy standing there

Every fucking time. And I'm welling up thinking about them right now!

Sean Connery was one of many actors who never did accents regardless of who they were supposed to be.

"Name of the Rose" and "Highlander" would have been worse if he had tried.  You would have felt cheated.

Tommy Lee Jones, Michael Caine and James Mason are others.

Compare Tom Cruise not even trying to sound German in "Valkyrie" with his dreadful Irish accent on "Far and Away".
